Emile's San Jose, CA
Excellent food! We ordered the "Prix Fixe" dinner. For $36 per person, you get to choose one item each of the three categories: starters, entrees, and desserts.
Starters: - Roasted Chicken Cannelloni - Grilled Pollenta - Rosettes of House Cured Gravlax - Five Onion Soup - Fresh Specialty Soup of the Day - Salad Melee
Entrees: - Filet of Beef Neptune - Grilled Duck Breast Spiedini - Seafood Vol-au-vent - Emincee Veal
Desserts: - Grand Marnier of Capuccino Souffle - Almond Tuille with Vanilla Ice Cream - Warm Apple Tart with Caramel Sauce
We ordered the Roasted Chicken Cannelloni for starter, the veal and seafood for entree, and ice cream and apple tart for dessert. All excellent.
Le Petit Bistro Mountain View, CA
Le Petit Bistro is located in an unlikely area for such a high grade restaurant. The building is quite modest, but don't let that fool you. The food is excellent. The Roma soup was very tasty. The filet mignon "filet de boeuf au poivre vert de Madagascar" was very tender and flavored with a creamy sauce ($21.95). Definitely worth trying.
Valley Bar & Grill Mountain View, CA
Valley Bar & Grill is a new restaurant in Downtown Mountain View (January 2000). You walk into the restaurant through the bar and an open area that looks like a future location for a dance floor. Sound system fans should check out their gear which is stacked up high behind the bar.
The dining area is comfortable and nicely decorated. We were seated near the entrance of the dining area which is a bad location. It felt like I was sitting in the middle of a hallway watching the foot traffic zipping by.
Here is a partial list of their entrees: Crab Cakes, Penne Regatta, Prime Charbroiled, NY Steak, Chicken Alba, Valley Burger, Slow Roasted Prime Rib, etc. The Crab Cake was my choice and it was delicious!
Straits Cafe Palo Alto, CA
If this is your first time to a Singaporean restaurant, order the Sampler Platter as appetizer. It comes with satay, samosa, oysters, and kway pai ti. Recommended entrees: Chap Chye (stir-fry cabbage, straw mushrooms, bried bean curd, noodle) and Kari Ayam (boneless chicken breast with vegetables).
Straits Cafe (Palo Alto) has a very nice interior setting. Don't let that make you think the pricing is high. Although some of the dishes are over $10, I believe the average is still under $10.
Very busy place. Best to make reservation.
My favorite dish at Thai Orchid is Pad Thai (Thai rice noodles sauteed with prawns, egg, tofu, bean sprout, green onion, and ground peanut). Yellow Curry (chicken, potatoes, carrot, opion, and coconut milk) is also excellent. Service is very good. Small family atmosphere.
The Mandarin Cuisine Palo Alto, CA
The Mandarin Cuisine is a get-what-you-pay-for type of place. Lunch special serves between 11 to 3 Monday thru Saturday. It comes with soup of the day, egg roll, choice of fried rice, steamed rice, or vegetable chow mein. I ordered the Cashew Chicken which is so so (not very tasteful).
Pommard Deli Cafe Rotisserie Palo Alto, CA
Food is very good especially the rotisserie chicken and the lasagne. I eat at Pommard frequently but over 50% of the time, my food was not heated evenly (cold spots). Also, don't go there unless you have plenty of time to wait for your food.
Chef Ming Restaurant San Jose, CA
Chef Ming serves Cantonese style food, specializing in seafood. Dim Sum is very good (weekends). This is a popular place for wedding banquets on weekend evenings. Recommended dishes: Prawns in Lobster Sauce, Chinese Broccoli in Oyster Sauce, Pan Fried Minced Squab with Lettuce, and Beef with Broccoli.
Vasso Azzuro Mountain View, CA
Vasso Azzuro was opened back in July of 1999. My first visit was about one month after the grand opening. When I walked in, my first impression was clean and well designed interior. People are friendly, homemade house bread is excellent, food is great, and prices are reasonable. I've gone back few more times since my first visit and will recommend to friends anytime!
Fook Yuen Seafood Restaurant Millbrae, CA
Date Visited: October 7, 1997 Time: Dinner Dishes Ordered and Rating (1-5) ----------------------------------------- Filet of Beef & Spring Onion Saute (5) Noodle with Conpay & Needle Mushroom (5) Live Cod (5) Dungeness Crab (4) Chinese Broccoli in Oyster Sauce (4) Friendly service. We brought our own birthday cake into the restaurant. As soo as the waiter saw that, he offered to keep it in the refridgerator for us. After dinner, he brought out the cake with forks and plates. He even furnished candles, cut the cake, and served it. What a treat!
Hobee's Palo Alto, CA
Energy blend (stawberry banana) has become one of my favorites, and is exceptionally scrumptious. And my girlfriend has to have the fine taste of their Sonoma Browns entree, every single time. (Need I remind you, we go at least once a week) with the exception of Monday nights *hint*. I, on the other hand, have to have anything egg. I really enjoy their Florintine Scramble, and Mt. View special. I would definately recomend Hobee's, if you like to eat healthy. One time my girlfriend and I went to Hobee's on an extremely busy night, and my girlfriend's food came late, the waitress apologized as well as the manager, and let us have the (yes, you guessed it, Sonoma Browns) for free. And the best part about it, to us, the food really didn't seem all that late. We never said a word about it. Their curtesy was pleasant.
Shadowbrook Capitola, CA
Its a great setting. The tram ride down to the restaurant from the parking lot was enjoyable. The restaurant building has a very complicated layout with many levels. Very romatic setting. People were very pleasant. However, they seated us at a two-person table/booth right in the middle of the main staircase. After we sat down, we felt like we were a display item. Also, the traffic by that table was very heavy. We asked to change table and the hostress acted promptly and gave us a window table. I ordered the New York steak and it was very good and the portion was huge. After dinner, we gave ourselves a tour of the restaurant. We walked two levels down and went out to the courtyard. From the courtyard, we walked up a long stairway back to the entrance where the tram was. From that point, we could either take the tram back to the parking lot or take the trail. We decided to take the trail since we ate quite a bit. Overall, it was a nice, romatic, and adventurous night.
Hangen Szechuan Restaurant Mountain View, CA
This is one of the cleanest Chinese restaurant I've even been, especially in the Downtown Mountain View area. We went there for dinner and service was very good. The hostress and the waitress were very pleasant. We ordered the Mongolian Beef, Vegetable with Sizzling Rice, and Vegetable Fried Rice. All the dishes were well above average, especially the fried rice. I would definitely go back and would recommend it to friends.
Palo Alto Joes Palo Alto, CA
Their homemade ravioli with meat and mushroom sauce is my favorite. I also like the Mezzo Mezzo. It is half ravioli and half spaghetti dish. You have a choice of mushroom sauce or marinara sauce. I've only tried the mushroom sauce and it was delicious.
Thai Garden Restaurant Palo Alto, CA
Pad-Thai is the only dish I really like at Thai Garden. I've tried the Ginger Beef and the Imperia Chicken and both were so so. The Thai Fried Rice with Chicken is not bad. The atmosphere is kind of strange (almost humorous). The restaurant shares a building with a bowling alley. You can constantly hear the noise of bowling balls meeting the pins. I couldn't help guessing whether the noise represents a strike or a spare. :-)
Mike's Cafe etc. Palo Alto, CA
I would call Mike's Cafe a neat restaurant. I cannot comment on dinner since I've never been there in the evening. Their lunch is excellent. I've had sandwiches, pasta, seafood, and lasagna, they were all above average. People there are very friendly. They greet you just like you were a guest at their house. I felt like I was being invited into my friend's dinning room. Its definitely worth a try.
Moonraker Restaurant Pacifica, CA
Great view! Almost every table in the restaurant has a terrific view of the Pacific Ocean. Good place to watch the sunset. I went there on a Saturday evening. There was a piano player playing on a grand piano in the lounge. The music was broadcasted throughout the restuarant. The food was excellent. I ordered the steak and lobster. The lobster was exceptional. The vegetable was on the salty side. I guess the cook must have put salt in it at least twice by mistake. Overall, the atmosphere and food were excellent. A little bit on the pricy side, but its worth it.
Fresco Palo Alto, CA
The Caesar Salad with grilled chicken breast was the best in this part of town. The Linguine with Chicken is also worth a try. Nice setting inside the restaurant. Their phone number is 415/493-3470
Babbo's Palo Alto, CA
Their chicken dish was outstanding. People were friendly. I went there on a Friday night and it wasn't very crowded. A "must try" especially after a long day of shopping at Stanford.
Pleasant Taste Chinese Restaurant Sunnyvale, CA
The inside of the restaurant is bright and clean. People are quite pleasant. I only visited there once and its was for take-out. All four dishes I ordered were very good: chicken with mixed mushroom, prawns with oyster sauce, pot stickers, and wor-won-ton soup (these are probably not the exact names of the dishes). The pot stickers are the biggest I've ever seen served in restaurants. Prices are reasonable consider the large portion they serve. This is a good place for family dinners. I doubt that you'd ever need to wait for a table. Not a very good place to impress a first date ;-)
