Restaurant Name City
The Fishery Placida, FL
The Fishery – ownership change. We are locals who have enjoyed The Fishery restaurant in Placida for many years but in and out of the winter snowbird season. The restaurant changed owners this past year, and when we tried to visit before the season came, we found they were closed except for Thursday through Sunday. This time we made reservations for last Saturday night for our small party of four. Initially the person who answered the phone said they had nothing at 6:00 so I asked her for another time, and she came back in a few minutes and said we could have a reservation at 6:30. Upon arrival, all the parking was packed ( I need a handicap space fairly close to the entrances) and the closest available parking was about 300 yards away. We did find a spot in their front driveway where we could park and still let traffic pass, and entered the restaurant. Seating took a little while as the hostess was a little frazzled with all the folks waiting who did not call in advance. This has been an “Old Florida” restaurant who did not take reservations in the past except for big groups. Once seated, service was quick for beverages and order placing, and appetizers did arrive in 20 minutes or so. The main course, which arrived piping hot and well presented took an hour and fifteen minutes from order time. The waitress told us several times that the kitchen was backed up a lot. The wait staff was really almost running trying to keep up, but with the huge menu plus the additional seating created by the new owners on an outside deck just overloaded the facilities in parking, cooking, and even a line for the restrooms. In addition, there is now entertainment in the form of a piano player in the main dining area, plus a singer or a combo on the deck, so the music conflicts with each other, and the people raise their voices to be heard, and the noise is deafening. You cannot carry on any conversation at the table. I cannot recall every having heard such a cacophony and any waterfront restaurant in my 70 years. We will try it again out of season, and hopefully the new owners will quit trying to be all things to all people and specialize in their location, great food, and limit the outside patio menu (as well as the inside one) in order to let the kitchen flow properly.
Don's Drive in Traverse City, MI
Old time diner with great juicy burgers. Said to be the best in Michigan, and I would believe it. Fast and friendly service. Build you own 1/4 or 1/2 lb burger, cooked the way you like it, and add what you want on it including grilled onions, three cheeses, etc. Fries, Onion Rings, Fried Mushrooms - all were very good. Better go hungry!
La Senorita Rstrnts Acq Corp Traverse City, MI
I'm from Texas, and as far at this place goes, it is the best Mexican or Tex-Mex place I have found in the Midwest! From the margaritas to the Salsa to the main course, everything was right on target. Service was outstanding. Hot plates, actual chili con queso, chalupas - it all ws great. I was really very pleasantly surprised.
Dean's South of the Border Punta Gorda, FL
True Mexican - not, Tex-Mex, well maybe but even that is a stretch. OK place to go and the margaritas are way above average for this area. This is one of the better places in the area, but nothing to drive too far to reach. very popular with the locals inthe "season", but most of them are from the North and would not recognize good Mexican food anyhow.
Bankok Restaurant Sarasota, FL
I'm surprised that this place is not previously listed as it has been a stronghold of the Thai restaurants in Sarasota for years. From an early beginning as a small cafe, this restaurant has grown into a true place that must be visited. Just off Clark Road at Swift in the shopping cneter. Authentic Thai (I have visited Thailand) in a luxurous setting, with great table presentation and iimpeccable service. You get a choice of spice levels in all the spicier dishes. We started with chicken satay served over a small tabletop grill with the traditional sauces, then my partner had a baked seafood cassarole that was out of this world while I had Pad Thai with scallops. Sticky rice and mangos for desert and a great bottle of wine topped of a fabulous evening. A must do in Sarasota in my book.
Clock Family Restaurants Okeechobee, FL
We stopped in for a late breakfast and were very pleasantly surprised. not only was the breakfast buffet good, but it includes eggs to order and juice, all for 7.19. Omelettes were the same price and very good. Can't go wrong here - extensive menu as well as buffet and the friendliest staff in town. I overheard a couple at the next table saying they had been to this restaurat almost every week this season.
Beijing Chinese Restaurant Houston, TX
This is a pretty good chinese buffet restaurant on the north side of Houston. All entre's were hot and fresh, salad bar is very limited, only a few choices of sushi. Friendly and attentive staff. A good spot for a quick lunch.
Brisket Bar B.q. Bellaire, TX
This is a long time BBQ restaurant in Bellaire, TX serving Brisket, Sausage, Chicken, Turkey and Ribs. I've been eating here since the 80's and the food has always been consistently excellent. Burgers are also available, and a BBQ chef salad is a very good choice. They also do custom cooking and catering. Soft drinks and beer are available. On a 1-10 scale Brisket - 10 Ribs - 8 Chicken -8 Turkey - 10 Sausage - 8 Sides - 9 Amount of food - 10 Well worth the trip - just outside of Loop 610 on Bissinnet Street.
Snook Haven Venice, FL
Snook Haven Old Florida charm waterfront dining experience on the Myakka River, Land of the Killer Turtles. Visited in November 2007 for an afternoon snack and boat cruise. From I-75 exit River Road exit 191, turn west, look for entrance sign on left after 1 mile and turn left down a dirt road. The restaurant, store, and kayak rental building is at the end of the road – about a mile. Open 7 days a week, and has a lot of music. Check their website at We had lunch this trip and most of the entre’s were under $10 with beer and wine available. It was Saturday, and they had live entertainment. You can check the website or give them a call for details. Service was excellent, the food good and hot, and the atmosphere very relaxing. I had butterfly fried shrimp and my pal had a Caesar salad with chicken. We did take Captain Terry’s Riverboat Tour – about and hour and $12 (cash only) and it was a good way to finish our day. I live locally and have been to Snook Haven about a half-dozen time and have never been disappointed.
Turtles On Little Sarasota Bay Sarasota, FL
Turtle’s on Little Sarasota Bay opened in 1986 and has been popular ever since. We had brunch there during October 2007. We were the first couple there and the kitchen opens at 11:30. Very nice location on Little Sarasota Bay faces East (no sunsets. Outside seating is available. Prices were very reasonable including bottle of Salmon Creek California Wine for about $10. That might be is an "out of season special". I had the Grouper sandwich and it was outstanding - grilled with just a touch of garlic. One of the best I've had. My friend had Krunchy Mahi which is Dolphin (NOT Flipper) and she could not finish it and had to take a to-go box. We like it so much we went back for dinner a couple of weeks later and had a great experience as well. In addition to fresh seafood selections, they offered Lamb, Veal, Steak, Pasta’s and a couple of specials. Entre pricing in the evening was from $9 to $20 which is very low for a waterfront location. We will be back! Website is
Barnacle Bills Englewood, FL
The restaurant seats around 50 people and is open for Lunch and Dinner. There are really great lunch specials reasonably priced. However! They serve one of the greatest hamburgers around. Huge, done to perfection, and comes with all the toppings! I had the Bacon Cheeseburger as did my pal, and both of us ended up taking home ½ of the sandwich. Both of us are men with good appetites, so this is a monster burger on a monster bun. There were several tables of workers in the place at lunch, and almost everyone carried out a doggie bag. Fries and onion rings were an “also ran” and nothing to brag about. This place is worth a drive if you are a burger fan – this is the best I’ve had in many years!
Casa Loca Port Charlotte, FL
This is a relatively new Mexican restaurant in Port Charlotte in the Charlotte Harbor area just north of King’s Highway. It replaces a biker bar and bbq restaurant that was named Hogbodies, I think. Very well theme decorated and clean as a pin. Lots od Saltillo tile and is very well laid out - one side is a cantina and the other is a restaurant. Lunch margaritas are two for one, so be careful because they are great! Great salsa and chips – much better than most in the area. I had beef fajitas and they came sizzling to the table with lots of onions and peppers. As good as any I’ve had. They are also available with a choice of pork, chicken, and shrimp. My lunch guest had the burritos and remarked it was the best she had eaten in a long while. Being from Texas, I am probably too severe a critic on most of the Mexican restaurants in Florida, but this one gets a gold star! Check their website at for specials and coupons. I definately will be back and i have been driving to Ft. Myers to get my "Mexican fix".
T-Bone Tom's Meat Market Kemah, TX
I stopped by on a recent trip to Houston, and as and update, T-Bone Tom's has only gotten better. There is the backyard which is open in the late afternoons and has almost nightoly entertainment. The dining room seemed a little bigger than my last trip, and was, as usual, packed for lunch, but there was not a long wait. Steaks, burgers, steak fiangers, catfish. I had the Chicken Friend Steak which was just about right-sized for lunch and had an excellant cram gravy. My companion had the friend catfish special and could not possible finish toe portion served - and it was excellant. If you are in the NASA/Clear Lake area, this is a MUST!
La Casita Navasota, TX
This Mexican restaaurant has been on the bypass in Navasota just south of Wallmart for many years and is widely favored by the locals. I have eaten there several times and can recommend the restaurant as being the best in the area, and one of the better ones in Texas for true Tex-Mex food. There is a broad selection of combinations and specialties, $2 margaritas for lunch, and the enchiladas and fajitas are excellant. Service is very prompt and the place is clean as can be.
Ruthie's Cafe Navasota, TX
This is an old time Texas BBQ shack located on State 105 just on the west side of town. Ruthie started it, but lately her son is usually there. Just a few tables, bottled soft drings, very quaint. The Boat/mutton/cabrito BBQ is very good when they have it. Worth a stop for lunch or a take out.
Salt Lick Driftwood, TX
Texas BBQ at it's best. This ranch turned into a BBQ about 30 years ago has been constucted with field stone from the pastures that surround it. You can order off the menu by the sandwich, pound, or plate, and even family style. Great potato salad, the brisket is an 8, the ribs a 9, and the sausage a solid 10. This is dry-rubbed BBQ and done right! No alcohol is served, but bring your own brewskis or wine, and sit outside and listen to music while you wait for a table. Or get the girls to fix you a fresh lemonade while you wait! Loads of parking. On Hiway FM1826 just east of Driftwood, TX - look carefully for the cars as the sign is hard to see, and the repeat customers don't care!
Martin's Restaurant Montgomery, AL
Down home Southern Cooking the way it has always been. Fried Chicked was top knotch, and the chicken friend steak was out of sight. Worth a stop for sure!
Los Cucos Mexican Cafe Houston, TX
Really great local Mexican chain with great service, good margaritas, and a HUGE selection of entres. Sevice was the best of the best, the food hot and tasty, and a lot of variations on the standard fare. Definately worth a trip.
Gramma Dot's Restaurant Sanibel, FL
Back again in August 2007, and it is only better! Wine and beer only, located in the Sanibel Marina on North Yachtsman Drive - THERE IS NOT A ROAD SIGN - this is kind of a locals only restaurant. super friendly, great food - even down to a fruit cup served in a chocolate shell. My travelling partner (date) asked me why I considered this to be one of the best on the island, and I told here - just wait and form your own opinion. We took home their key lime pie for desert later - and all she could say was WOW, I see why you keep coming back.
Mucky Duck Captiva, FL
2007 Update - The Mucky Duck (nee The Black Swan)is a beachfront casual restaurant on the main drag of Captiva Island, Andy Rosse Lane) , and right on the beach. Wine and beer, and wine based margaritas which are not bad. Great place for a few drinks, entertainment, reasonably priced food, and a fabulous sunset. If there is a sunset place to be on Captiva, this is it - outside under an umbrella, music in the background. Website and webcam are at After the sunset go to the Bubble Room and pick up desert - the cheese cake is out of sight, The key Lime Pie is an also ran. The Orange Delight (of something like that) was fabulous,
