Very good seafood choices here as well as non seafood. The chef/owner
situation is something I look for in a restaurant. I prefer this
place quite a bit more than it's very popular, but rather
seedy looking neighbor across the street, Haddad's Ocean
Cafe. Here the chef/owner pushes the envelope a bit more to get
a far more contemporary spin on seafood. I like the fact that the
chef is willing to try new things, interesting combinations,
and does a well crafted, thoughtfuly presented dining eperience.
I don't know the chef's background, but I suspect that
he is either a CIA grad, or the product of some other culinary training.
He is far above the usual fry cook / burger flipper that dominate
the south shore. The restaurant is clean as are the restrooms, (high
standads) the staff is pleasant and professional, (again,
high standards) and seem to care more about doing a good job than
most area restaurants (he motivates people). There are a few
flubs here and there, (a shushi appetizer was listed as sashimi(which
has no rice, and it was served with long grain Carolina type rice
instead of short grain sushi rice with would be mixed with a rice
vinegar if one was making sushi) that only the most critical people
would notice, but the majority of diners will have very nice time,
and the adventurous will have an opportunity to try some new things.
At least one place on the south shore is willing to break out of
the usual "clam chowder and baked haddock" box and
a take a shot at doing something better. I hope they continue to
"push the envelope" because the south shore desperately
needs an upscale shove in the right direction.
