Ok, so I was expecting a real drive in, and was a bit disappointed that
we were going to have to eat inside BUT, Dan's Drive In proved to
be excellent. Yes, it has a 50s diner feel, but there isn't a portrait
of James Dean nor a neon Coca Cola sign anywhere. How refreshing! I was
surprised by the extensive menu - something for everyone - but knew
I was going to have to try the 1 pound 'Big Mouth Burger.' Holy
cow! It was HUGE! Pretty good too. The fries were good, but the onion
rings were a rip-off at 5 for $2. This wasn't the best diner food
I've ever had but I would go back if I was in the area.

Service: acceptable - and that's about the only positive thing
I can say.
Ambience: family, seniors by day, drunks by night. Dive. If you're
not dressed up enought to go to TJayes after the bars close.
Food: awful, offset only by cheap. Tastes like axle grease. Cleanliness: would lower the rating from 1 if it were possible.
Do NOT use the bathrooms. Good enough reason not to eat here. Could
use a vomitorium.
Staff: dive-friendly.

Ahhh what can I say about Dan's Drive In.
This place is so rich in South Side Columbus history.
This is your typical 24-hour greasy spoon and so much more.
Back in the 70's this was THE place to go for the biker crowd.
With the old type juke boxes and their juke babies right at the
bothes bring back so many memories.
Back then a nickel got Loretta Lynn, Dottie West. Merle Haggard,
or Charlie Pride to your hears in seconds.
You could sit outside and order a "Dandy-Girl" or "Dandy-Boy"
and have it brought right out to your car.
In the 80's, the carhops and motorcycles came to an end unfortunately,
but this was the CB'ers place of choice.
With the framed pencil charactures of Dolly Parton, Elvis, Hank
Williams Jr., and Tammy Wynette the place had a very country and
western grasy spoon feel to it.
The waitresses there were always friendly wise-cracking and
ready to help a trucker in need. (wink)
The red nogahide Swivel chairs lined the front counter just like
at a malt shop, matched the red nogahide of the booths.
This was honky-tonk at its best.
Just like many things from that time though it changed with the
90's.
The South side became a haven for drugs and ruffians who wanted
to ruin what was once Americana.
The Restuarant itself hasn't changed much, but the clients and
the waitresses have. Now the waitresses there have more tattoos,
and less teeth than i do.
The bring out your food with a grunt and a wheeze.
There is a take out drive thru window now, and a salad bar.
[Can you picture Mel's Diner with a salad bar? Kiss my grits.]
The food is as mediocre as ever, but without the charm Dan's once
once had, it just isnt the same.
This is now the "after-the-bar" closes restuarant.
So from 1-4am this place is packed with loud drunks and obnoxious
teens.
Dan's Drive-In will always hold a special place in my heart, but
not, it is simply a fading memory or an era now gone.

Food here is at the least average. The place is not real clean and
the atmosphere is lacking. Prices are fair and parking is adequate
