This place offers excellent value and if you like tiffany lamps and statuary you will be please with the decor. My companions were both vegetarian and were well pleased with their selections. I am a seafood lover and ordered the ciopinno, which while tasty, I afraid was a little overcooked. It's a dish that needs lots of love and care and its unusual to find it prepared well in anything but a seafood restaurant.

The biggest hit was the bowl full of gummy bears presented to us upon dessert! Totally rad! LOL

On of my favorite resturants in the Bay. My favorites are the gnocci and that huge bowl of penne w/ seafood. The stock they use for their sauces is what keeps me coming back for more, even when their prices when up. And of course the perfect ending of amarretto cookies and candies. YUM!

Plenty of other reviews to cover the food. Here's why I think this place is such a one-of-a-kind winner...
Go here and feel the love; ok more accurately feel the positive vibs that come from an establishment that cares enough to insure you are well fed with quality dishes in an atmosphere that is uniquely its own, not serious yet completely welcoming. Are all those chandelliers hanging from the ceiling from Murano, Italy? Nice touch. 5-Stars for getting the balance just perfect.

This restaurant not only has excellent food, but has an atmosphere unmatched anywhere. Be prepared to wait in line to get in -- the place is small and they do not take reservations. They also do not take credit cards, so be prepared to pay cash. You may end up seated at a table with people you don't know -- that is one of the fun things about this place. The bowl of gummy bears at the end of the meal was a great touch!
The "gentleman" who wrote the review in December was obviously not prepared for the experience or I think he would have enjoyed himself a lot more. Quite rude to not leave a tip -- do you know what waiters get paid these days?? SF is one of the most expensive cities in the country, so be nice to your wait staff and take their actions with a grain of salt (Kosher salt is best).

I didn't care for the atmosphere nor the service! My order was wrong and It seemed an inconvience for them to correct it, but when order was right It was pleasent food. Maybe I needed a differnt watier, I didn't leave tip, but if I would have goten good service I would have tiped high due to the taste of the food! Who knows I might go back, but I won't go out of my way. FIRST IMPRESSONS COUNT!!!!

I have been this restaurant several times, and I love this place. The owner is a very friendly guy. There is a waitress who have worked there for a long time is very nice, too. The food I recommend there is the seafood paste. It was so delicious that I can still remember the flavor I had it two months ago. Although it always take me half hour to wait, it is worth. Really!

Everytime I walked by there was a line outside. Recently, I got lucky and walked right in. A small kitschey restaurant. The linguine bolognese was above average but not amazing. The fisherman's stew was pretty good. At the end of the meal they dropped off the check, cookies and a gallon bowl of gummi bears. This is a cute, inexpensive restaurant for good, bordering on very good, food.

The restaurant is decorated with state-of-the-art kitsch paintings, and is generally inspired by italian "trattorie", so don't expect the sophisticated atmosphere of Salvini or Cipriani. The menu stresses the basics -paste, gnocchi- and rightly so: they taste better then those you can find in more trendy and expensive restaurants in the area. Differently form italian- american cuisine, garlic is not put in massive amounts in all dishes (except, maybe water), and this is a great plus. Finally, a dinner is reasonably priced and the service is friendly and efficient.

I love the food! large portions, great atmosphere and not the push to get out the door. That's why there's always a line. They treat you well. I have had the seafood, spectacular. The gnocci, heavenly. Everything is great. I used to go with many friends before the remodeling and I am happy to see the friendliness has not disappeared. I also must admit I have a very sentimental attachment. Good food, Good friends are happy memories of Michalangelo's for me.

A very fun North Beach place to eat- pasta is good, there's a great atmosphere, and the inside is decorated creatively. Narrow, crowded restaurant has oil paintings covering every inch of the walls and tables with lacquered prints. There is always a wait (no reservations taken) and it's cash only. Pastas lean towards seafood with large portions. Wine is served in a rooster-shaped pitcher with the beak as a spout and beautifully painted ceramic goblets. You get M&M's and amaretto cookies for dessert. This is a nice to celebrate a lively birthday, as they turn off ALL the lights when the birthday song is sung. Appetizers:$4-9 Pasta:$12-15 Main dishes:$14-17 -prosciutto with melon -kalamari pasta or seafood combo pasta is hearty and large -potato gnocchi with tomato sauce is delicious -cheese tortellini is very creamy and rich -salmon and pasta specials are generally good

FABULOUS Italian restraunt in North Beach. Right outside the door is Washington Square. The seafood pasta dishes are always great. I would also recommend the fried calamari, the house wine (served in adorable rooster pitchers). The dessert is on them (a bowl of cookies & gummi bears). Downfalls include the close quarters. Expect to sit right next to others and be bumped around a little due to the tight space. However, the food and the service makes up for it! Keep in mind, they do not take reservations and will not sit you until everyone in your party is present.

Good food! Salads are great. Tortellini Michaelangelo a real hit with my husband. We got there early on a Sunday evening and did not have to wait, but there was a long line when we left.
