The best meal ever. If you were reading these reviews to find the best food inthe Bay Area then your search is over. The only thing thatcould be improved would be the location since there is no view. For that, try Julius's Castle or the Carnelian Room (their foodis not even close though).Dinner took over four hours. Try the samplers because youget to taste everything they offer. I don't remember ourwine recommendation but we drank the bottle. Total withtip was $260. For the best meal ever, it was worth it :^)

I have been fairly consistently disappointed with SF
restaurants, with one exception - Masa's, which towers above
them all. I am puzzled by some of the negative reviews
indicated in this forum. Obviously Masa's is for special
occasions--I've been there no more than 3 or 4 times--but
it's been well worth it each time. I was in SF in 1993 when
my father died in London, I was trapped in the city for the
weekend, so I continued with my vacation plans (which
included a reservation at Masa's) and the y treated me very
well (my father's philosophy would be; don't change your
dining plans on my account). Is Masa's expensive? You bet.
Is "tasting menu" dining appropriate for everyone? No, you
have to know what to expect. I ended my last visit there
with a selection of 3 Armagnacs-poetry!

One of my best experiences ever. The food was wonderful. Initialy we
thought the portions were to small. After many courses that blneded
magically together we were perfectly content.
I found the service about the finest I have ever experienced excepting
Michael's in Las Vegas. Staff was righ there and we were running late
for the show so the staff invited us back after the show for the
dessert portion of our meal. We did return and even though it was paid
they treated us beautifully and we gorged on some of the finest
desserts ever.
This one is a treat!

Let me cast my vote with most of those above who rate this as one
of the WORLDS great restaurants. It is my favorite "special dinner"
place...the one place that I know I will always get something in-
credibly innovative, prepared and presented with the love of some-
one dedicated to making dining an art (nourishing to both the body
and the soul). The only problem I have with the menu is my desire
to order everything. I can only second those above who raved about
the fois gras in truffel sauce....I had not imagined anything could
taste so rich (almost sinful) and yet remain so sublime. There is
not a single 3 Star (Guide Michelin) restaurant that is not in the
same price range as Masa's so price is not an issue....make reserva-
tions here for any important anniversary...you'll not be disappointed!

Masa's is rated by just about everyone as the best French restaurant
in SF. I was disappointed. No question, the food is 5 star. The
food prepared by Chef Serrano was worth the visit alone. They offer 2
menus (both fixed prices) the less expensive at $ 70./person offers
the best variety and lets you choose from each category. The more
expensive ($ 75./person) offers an additional course (another dessert)
but there aren't as many choices as some courses have only one
option. The wine list seems endless and whatever you desire...they
have it. Figure spending $ 100./person for dinner.
The service our party of 4 received was not of the 5 star caliber. We
were seated in a corner of the restaurant and the service was
frankly....lacking. There were times when some of our water glasses
and bread plates were empty, and there was a lot of time in between
courses. They certainly have enough service staff to give the best of
service, but....
The interior is elegant with red velvet ...

I agree with most of the above comments. The atmosphere and food was
excellent. We ate there twice in one week on a business conference.
It is truly an unique experience eating there. Although I rated it
five stars, my main criticism is that the food is VERY EXPENSIVE and I
felt I should have expected even more for those prices. The wine list
is quite extensive, and I thought the prices were extremely inflated.

At the request of an angry E-mailer about my prior review of Masa's,
I decided to give the restaurant one more try. I brought a San
Francisco native who had never been to Masa's. As before, I was
underwhelmed, as was my guest. However, I did up my rating to four
stars and changed the entree pricing to Over $50 (which is really
not true since the dinners include multiple courses.) In reality
I could easily justify the three star rating, but in line
with most things in the city by the Bay, the rating is inflated.
The problem is not that Masa's is bad -- the issue is that there
are so many restaurants in other places that tower over Masa's. San
Franciscan's rate Masa's a 29 in food quality -- this is insane. A
26 would be more fair (for those unfamilar, Zagat's highest rating
is a 30). In my last review, I suggest that LA has many better
places (which remains true and I am not from LA). One I must
scratch from the list, however, is Rex IL in favor of Valentino.
My short list o ...

Reservarion at 9:30p,. We found 4 items on the menu were sold out. The
cost pre couple here is approx. $300
. In this price range, this is unacceptable. In addition, the waiting
area at the front is too crampt. The service is good, the staff is
accomaodating, the food is the strongest point.
Our summary: This is a restaurant knocking on the door of world class
but needs to rectify some deficiencies in order to gain entry.
