I've eaten here 4 times since it opened and the meals went from very
good to abysmal. 1st time - just months after it opened (yes a long time
ago!) 8 of us waited 30 mins for a table. The press about the place was
laudatory back then. We weren't allowed to order. They just brought
us many different dishes until we told them to stop. We had a great variety
of Won Tons, fishes, meats, vege's, noodles, etc.. Flavors were
distinctive, all was good. Waiter was arrogant yet extremely fast.
Subsequent visits I kept my hopes alive, but H of N never again delivered.
Over the following 15 years I came back 3 more times just with one companion.
Got crammed into tiny tables rubbing shoulders with the next table
diners. Had to shout above the noise. Oily air, surly waiters. Greasy
food that attempted to be adventurous and new wave, but just was plain
bad. I've since given up looking for a decent meal in Chinatown.

Absolutely without any doubt. . "the best" food, service
and experience possible. Large platers of each course were presented,
each one was incredible. I'll be back.

I came to San Francisco last year and thought the place was pretty
good.
Cheap (which made a nice change in S.F) and tasty food.
In a really seedy area though, I think it was next door to a brothel
and a few porn shops were nearby...nice.
Not a fantastic looking restaurant either, looked a bit like
a dirty east end cafe.
We were also warned that being british we would probably have
some picture of Jamie Oliver shoved in front of us, sure enough
a Jamie Oliver review of the restaurant was brought over by Nan
King and we were made to read it before we were allowed to order.
Except we wern't allowed to order, the menu was taken from
us and Nan King decided for us what we wanted to eat.
Still, good cheap food.

I went to HNK several years ago because a friend of mine told me
that it would be a great experience: both food and terrible service.
I must say that I remember the food being pretty darn good and the
service being the worst I have ever expeienced anywhere which
is why I can't wait to take my friends there!

I've been here about 3-4 times now and had mixed results.
I have to say, none of my return visits were anywhere near as good
as the first, even though I ordered the same dishes. I think it's
probably a question of how hungry you are, what you order, and
whether or not the cook is in a good mood.
But I was so pleased by my first meal here (fried tofu with peanut
sauce - light and golden crisp on the outside, steaming hot and
creamy inside with a slightly spicy peanut sauce that was not
too heavy, on a bed of delicious greens that has never reappeared
on subsequent visits, when ordering the same dish) that I will
let it continue to ride on its first impression. The long lines
out front on the weekends will tell you that there are plenty of
others who agree with me, although there are certainly strong
opinions on both sides.

One thing nobody disagrees about is that this place is famous
for horrific service. You will not get anyt ...

Have you noticed that Chinese people don't eat here...that
should be an indication. This is a tourist trap that serves overly
sweet Americanized Chinese food.

This place is totally a tourist spot. It is quite good but possibly
not as great as the hype it gets at time. It has a huge line so sometimes
the wait is not worth it. I would suggest going at lunch time if
you want to really enjoy the food and not feel rushed.

Great food. Don’t go for friendly people or atmosphere, becaus
you won’t get either one here. It’s small and cramped, but the
food is killer (people line up for this place). Service is prompt.
In, eat, out move on… that seems to be the idea here. Price is good
too.

The staff there is rude, any first time visitor will say. But they're
not hostile. Just rushed - they have a lot of customers.
Atmosphere / Service = 1 star ("there are no 0 star restaurants").
Food = 7 stars.
Go during off hours to avoid the long lines. And go in a group, so
you can share the food (you won't be able to eat more than 2 dishes
by yourself - don't try).
If you go back, and get bored by what's on the menu, ask for something
different. I did. And ended up with sizzling chicken. Don't ask
for Schezuan chicken, as I did my following visit - it angered
the owner. (He does have a bit of an accent and when he said sizzling
chicken I thought he said Schezuan chicken!). My bad.
