Was the original Russian Tea Room called The Russian Bear Restaurant
and was it at 57 West 57th street in the early 1900's. Around 1920?

Pricy, this is place that many of the Russian's that I worked with
would go to for a special night out. Drinks can put you two or three times
over budget if you're not careful. The wait staff are very nice,
and they used to have entertainment, do they still have that?

Lets face facts. you go to the tea room for power lunches. you go
to the tea room for the ambiance and concentration on service.
you go to the tea room to see famous shakers and makers while in
nyc, and you go there for afternoon high tea. if you go for dinner,
i suggest you make reservations now for next september or have
a few loose grants in your hand. also, so far as i can tell, you go
to the tea room for perhaps the best "captians wine list'
in town!

Simply put, do not eat at this place and expect Russian food. This
place has good food, nonetheless, but it can hardly be called
authentic Russian. The prices are reasonable considering the
atmosphere, decor, and service. Don't go to this place expecting
the taste of the food to knock your socks off, but you might see
a celebrity or two!!

The only thing Russian about this place is the moniker. The decor
is fabulous. Check out the fishtank...I mean "beartank" on the
second floor. The drinks, while pricey, are quite good. I'm particularly
fond of their vanilla martinis, which are among the best I've
ever had. The food, however, was less than stellar. A friend of
mine, a vegetarian, had a choice of polenta--which really isn't
much of a choice. And it ain't really Russian, either. At $300+
for dinner for four, I expected more.

I used to visit the Russion Tea Room last year. The decor and the
staff is really good enough, but as to the cooking... Dear Chief,
do you seriously consider it real russian food? When did you try
the real russian borscht with the sour cream last? Have you ever
tried it at all? Any housewife in Russia will teach you a great
lesson as far as borscht-cooking is concerned.
Well, may be almost any, then.

If you dont know this staple of NYCs thearter district, get familiar
with it. The food is really great! The chicken kiev is my favorite,
butter bursts out of the white meat, its sinful. Try the borscht
as well with the sour cream. If youve never gone, try it. It is a
bit pricey, especially with drinks, but well worth it.

I Have been to the Russian Tea Room approximately 4 times. I must
say I have never been disappointed ..... the staff is always friendly
and cordial and the food always superior, the decor magnificent.
This opinon is not mine alone, as I always bring parties of 4 or
6 with me to dine. The management is very obliging when it comes
to viewing the third and fourth floors.......which I might add
have been decorated in elegance to the enth.
All in all this is fast becoming one of my most favorite New York
City Restaurants to frequent.
