Going to Salvatore's the food often takes a back seat to the kitsch of the atmosphere. Where else can you dine under a twinkling, fiber-optic night sky? It's Italian marble, capidomonte, statues, oil fountains... all of the above. Your pepper is ground onto your salad by a battery-operated pepper grinder that has a flashlight which illuminates your lettuce. The crumbs are swept neatly away from your table with a little device for just such a purpose. Your waiters are starched, attentive, and completely knowledgeable of the menu. Often, you see Russ Salvatore himself preparing his Steak a la Russell (which is terrific) tableside for a customer. The food is tremendous, and the atmosphere is a kick.
