I love this restaurant. There aren't enough German restaurants in the Portland area but this one almost makes up for that fact. The fondue with the German breads is enough to fill me up so I have to limit myself. I really prefer the sauerbrauten since I remember it from my childhood. The beef is marinated to perfection and served with spaetzle. I could swear my Grandma cooked the meal :-)

I went to the Rheinlander with my mother last summer, and I still haven't forgotten it. The food was very good, and the atmosphere was very neat. It's a nice place to go when you're tired of fast food. I liked their sausages very much. My mom liked it so much, she made a scrapbook page on it.

WOnderful ambience! Food is excellent, service is great but the wandering accordion players can get a little irritating. Not a place for young children, but older teenagers may appreciate it.

Everybody seems to love Der Rheinlander, and I'm no exception. This is one place where you'll never walk away hungry. You certainly get your money's worth, for both the food and the entertainment (if you can stomach the strolling accordion players...I guarantee you will hear "Edelweiss" played at least once every visit). We always bring out of town guests here, for there's simply no other place quite like it! For starters, the swiss fondue is very good, served with both white and rye bread cubes (go for the rye, it's got a more intense flavor). Then you have a choice of soups or salad (I always choose the French onion soup...it's got big chunks of onion floating in a dense, flavorful broth...very good). Then you're served large rolls with plum butter - these are chewy and tasty, but be careful, you may already be feeling full and your entree hasn't even arrived yet! I can recommend many excellent main courses here. My favorites include the kraut roulad ... more

The treat of a lifetime. If you have people in from out of town this is the place to take them. They will thank you for ever. It's more than a place to get great food, it's an experience to remember.....

I went to this restaurant for the ordination dinner of one my frends last June. It was easily the best German food I've ever had outside of someone's home. The dinner started with a fondue with several kinds of bread, followed by a butter lettuce salad with bay shrimp, with a light dressing. The soup, which was based on lentils, was hearty yet not at all heavy. For our main course, there was chicken, schnitzel, roast beef, pork roast, spaetzle, and red cabbage, all of which were cooked properly, with some sort of plum-based sauce. Having eaten at many German restaurants (I'm of Austro- Hungarian and German descent, from the German section of Chicago), I was impressed with how this restaurant had lightened their menu, since German food is traditionally very heavy and greasy.
