It's hard for me to know "authentic" or "not authentic"
German food, so I'll just tell you this is "good" food!
Service can be a bit slow, but just look on it as a chance to relax.

I have been to Rheinlander three times since December, and have been
disappointed two out of those three times. The first time was supposed
to be a nice night out with my boyfriend and it took two hours before we
even got done there. We waited at least 15-20 minutes for the fondue
and each course took at least that long to come. By the time we got our
meal, it was cold and it took forever just to get our check. The next time
it was okay and the service was better because there wasn't anyone
eating there. But I just went back for my birthday with a party of 14 and
although they had a room exclusively for us, it was as if they had closed
us off and we only had one server. We waited forever for our drinks and
one of my friends even returned with a drink from the bar before we got
them. The food tasted good, but the service was awful.
I suggest if you're going to be going that way and you want German
food, go to Gustav's. They always have excellent service and their
food is wo ...

I decided to try a German restaurant before going to a German opera.
Pretty cool place, really got me in the mood for the opera. My girlfriend
liked it too. The wait wasn't too bad the night I went, but I've
heard that it can be a problem.

The best German food I have found in Portland. Besides the german food,
they have really good fondue. This is definately a place you have to
take out of town visitors. The service is top notch also and a great atmosphere.

As I pulled into the parking lot at the start of dinner service(being
from out of town), I noticed a long lineup of cars dropping people off.
Once inside and seated, I understood the reason for the popularity.
The large dining room fills up quickly, and the food was excellent.
From the extensive selection of German brews on tap, to the varied menu
of well-prepared traditional and regional specialities, the Rheinlander
proved to be a wonderful dining experience. Service was prompt and
attentive, and the waitstaff patiently answered my numerous questions
about the menu.
For the price, it would be hard to find a better dining experience in
the Portland area.

We went to the Rhinelander early on a Friday afternoon to take advantage
of the early dinner specials; at 5:30 the restaurant, which is large
was already filling up. And with good reason; the food and service were
excellent and the strolling musicians were delightful. The early
specials offer a wide variety of entries and the meals include swiss
cheese fondue and choice of soup (all for under $15.00). This restaurant
is not to be missed if you are in Portland.
