Crescent City opened in the late 1930's and was the first to
serve 'sizzling' in butter steaks. This was copied by
Chris' Steak House across the street and, of course, was
used by Ruth Fertel when she cranked up her outfit by buying
the old Chris' Steak House in the early 1970's. Crescent
City sells really 'aged' prime beef; with an almost 'moldy'
quality that doesn't click with some people, but I find
it a wonderful taste. The best cut is the strip; their
T-Bone is also super. Their salad is forgettable, and their
sides are limited: Lyonnaise potatoes, au gratins, fries,
etc. I like their German fries which are boiled before they
are fried. What you go here for are the steaks; they are
truly outstanding! They are every bit as good as Ruth's, but
are about $5 cheaper. Crescent City, also, is the place to
go on those nights when you can't get into any other
restaurant: New Year's Eve, Mardi Gras day, etc. There is
never a crowd; frequently you can be the sole table. It's a
great place, and I hope it stays around another 50+ years.
