One word - muffulettas. The smells of the special olive dressing
and garlic inside this wonderful Italian deli are enough to give
you an appetite. If you are going to have a muffuletta - then this
is the ONLY place to get one. And it's cheap!
Muffaletta. When we go - we have to get a bunch for our friends and
put them in a cooler. No joke. You can't eat an entire sandwich
- split one with a friend.

Incredible muffalata. I've had that sandwich recommended
to me for ages, but this one made the recommendations all worthwhile.
Spectacular.

Central Grocery and it's world famous muffalatta. You can't
go wrong with this place. Its an old time deli/market that has
been around forever. For those who went back in the 60s, they will
be more then happy to see NOTHING has changed. It's like stepping
into a time machine. Italian food, like an Italian family only
knows how to do it.

The aroma alone sold me. . great muffalatta (the best according
to PBS) and efficient service (not to mention the only reasonably
priced food we found in the French Quarter)!

I went to Tulane in the 60's, and a Muffalattah and a cold Dixie
or Jax at the Central were a real treat. I went back Christmas week
of '03, and I'm happy to say that nothing has changed.
Next to Johnny's for Po-Boys, this place is the best!

good sandwich. The best in the city!

Carry out a muffaletta. It is enough for two. Bring your own knife
and cut it in half. Wow! You will enjoy this flavor for hours and
hours. Order some breath mints while you are in the store.

Depending on who you believe, the famous New Orleans sandwich
staple was created at either the Central Grocery or Progress
Grocery. Whoever was first, just be thankful someone invented
it and order yourself a muffaletta from Central Grocery. The
true muffaletta is made with genoa salami, mortadella, and ham,
layered with provolone cheese on a round loaf of bread cut in half,
and smothered with a relish of diced olives in olive oil. If you
don't like olives, you might not like this, but you probably
will anyway. You can also buy jars of their muffaletta relish
to take home with you, which you should because it's an easy
sandwich to make which easily feeds 2 to 4 people.

Two places I never miss in NOLA, Cafe du monde and Central grocery.
This is a tradition. Walk up to the counter and order a Whole and
a Barq's. You can't go wrong.
