This is the kind of restaurant urban myths are made of.
It's two blocks north of the LA Convention Center. It
has been open twenty-four hours a day for the past 75
years. It's a meat-eater's kind of place - several
kinds of steak. I like the "beef stew." I put it in
quotes because it has no liquid content. It's chunks
of food piled on a plate. You eat it with a fork.
Mythos has it that the place is owned by the waiters.
Another myth says it's owned by Mayor Richard Riordan.
You could take a date or take the family, but the
emphasis would be on the historical setting rather
than the romance.

Look people.....CLEANLINESS is one of the main things when rating
a restaraunt. The one time that I ate here turned me off from ever
coming back. No matter how long the people have been in business,
there is no excuse for a restaraunt being this nasty. The food
was average. I could get the same things at any IHOP or Carls Jr.
If these people would clean up the place I would come back and re
rate at maybe 3 stars. I wonder how the health department lets
these people get away with it????

I like their breakfast, it's huge. In taste and portion size.
The price is right, the service good, but they have to clean up
the place, have more lights, paint and some remodeling, because
it's an old place, but has to be more hygienic. The health departament
close the restaurant when they started the A, B, C letters coding.
Now i'm sure that the place is a little better, but Richard Riordan(the
owner) should do something about it.

The Pantry has been in business for over 75 years and there are
several reasons for it:
1) The Food - it's good, plentiful and tastes homemade!
2) The Price - Where can you get a 1" thick steak dinner for $13?
3) The service - Fast and friendly, with entertaining and attentive
waiters.
You will be stunned by the portion sizes and by the homemade taste...
The pantry is outstanding, and you may find yourself outstanding
(in line to get in that is) but it's worth the wait! For a fast meal,
order items from the 'Chalkboard' or have one of their world-famous
steaks (I recommend the Top Sirloin HIGHLY). Great for breakfast,
lunch or dinner before the game at the Staples Center!

One of the world's great restaurants--truly. Outstanding
home-cooked food. Entertainingly old-fashioned waiters. It's one
of the things I miss since leaving LA. You sit down and get a
half loaf of sourdough bread and a huge bowl of carrots, celery
and radishes on ice. Then the world's best cole slaw. Then
incredible food of all kinds. The ambiance hasn't changed since
1927 (nor has the restaurant been closed for a minute since
then). You can sit next to the mayor, someone from the nearby
convention center, or someone off the street--it's totally
democrat and a wonderful experience that I highly recommend to
ANYONE in the LA area. Make sure to get their free booklet
telling you how much food they serve on a yearly basis--it's
amazing! DWH: http://www.will-harris.com
