I'd heard a lot about Ruth's Chris Steak House because they don't have one where I live. So all the anticipation of visiting the steak house so nice they named it twice evaporated with the experience I had.
My dinner companion said the Ruth's Chris in Annapolis and this location were great, but he didn't like the other Baltimore location. You could have fooled me, because this location was not what you'd expect when shelling out big bucks.
To start, I asked for a Manhattan with either Booker's or Woodford Reserve bourbon. Our server wasn't sure if they had one or either, so he asked for a backup option, which I said could be Maker's Mark in a pinch. When he brought the drink, he neglected to tell me which bourbon it was, which isn't that big a deal, but you think he'd tell me since I specifically asked for a certain type.
The whole lobster we ordered was immaculate, cooked to sweet perfection and removed totally from the shell, per our request. The meal took a turn for the worse when our filets, which we both ordered medium, were anything but. Medium is usually described as having a pinkish center. The dead center of both filets had no pink, only grey throughout. You figure a steakhouse would undercook something rather than overcook, given the prices and for what the kitchen is shelling out for prime cuts of beef. The second effort wasn't much better, delivering mine which was probably more medium well, but I wasn't about to wait for a third time.
Dinner and drinks, of which we both had a few, came to $290, which is astounding even for a place this expensive. It helps that the tab was covered by his company's expense account. But I was largely disappointed by the hype surrounding Ruth's Chris, much as children are disappointed to find out Santa Claus is really just Mom and Dad.
I'll give Ruth's Chris another shot, but it'll have to be on someone else's dime again.
