Chef Jonathan Krinn is a genius. Who knew that this elegant restaurant,
housed in the first floor of an office building on a lake, would
reveal such a treasure? From every seat, diners have a view of
the lake, waterfalls, or koi ponds. But something else brings
me to 2941 besides the beautiful surroundings. Krinn marries
flavors as good as (if in some cases not better than) the highly
touted Bob Kinkead at his popular nearby Colvin Run Tavern. And
2941 will definitely give the Inn at Little Washington a run for
my money. Spend a special occasion here in one of the private dining
rooms, or even spend some quiet time sitting alone at the bar with
a house-made martini whilst overlooking the koi pond. In the
winter, sit at one of the tables located next to a fireplace for
a romantic dinner. The wine list is comprehensive but simple
and the prices do not offend or insult the patron and champagne
is available by the glass. The menu is seasonal so don't get
too attached to a specific menu item. Order something different
each time and try Krinn's magic with the elegant and correctly
placed flatware and glassware (other upscale restaurants take
note!). Be careful not to overindulge in the bread basket. The
bread is housemade by Krinn's dad and usually there are 4-5
different yummy selections in your breadbasket. You could make
a meal of the bread, it is so fantastic. The foie gras terrine far
outshines any other foie gras I've eaten even in Europe.
As an example of Krinn's marrying of flavors, one of the most
interesting desserts included a scoop of black pepper ice cream
paired with a gingersnap cookie. Very unique and interesting
tastes which went well together. I absolutely despise eggplant,
but loved the eggplant, roasted tomato, and goat cheese terrine
appetizer. Like Patrick O'Connell at the Inn at Little Washington,
Krinn can get me to eat just about anything I wouldn't normally
order. For those of you with more simple palates, there are sandwiches,
pizza and even a burger on the lunch menu. The service is usually
good (better at lunchtime), but Friday and Saturday nights become
very hectic and rushed as the restaurant will fill to capacity.
The waitstaff is still a bit junior and, when food is ready to be
presented at your table, still refers to notepads as to which
diner receives which food order. This can be overlooked as the
service is not snooty. I do have a favorite waiter who always takes
care of me so do tip the staff well. Although I have thoroughly
enjoyed every meal at 2941, one recent Saturday night, my "medium"
salmon (which I'd tried another day during lunch and was
heavenly) was overdone and the mashed potatoes oversalted.
Lesson Learned: Try 2941 on a night other than Saturday and you
won't be disappointed. And there are no salt and pepper shakers
on the table!!!! Expertly prepared food does not need to be reseasoned
by the patron. For dessert, try any of the homemade ice creams
or even try the daily cheese selection for a sample of European
style. The restaurant also serves brunch on Sundays. Call Michelle
for reservations -- you'll be glad you did or you will have
a very long wait for a table on Saturday nights. Leave the kids
at home and have a special night out for just the two of you -- the
menu wouldn't suit the kids anyway. Unfortunately, the
restaurant allows smoking at the bar which on a Saturday night
can overpower Krinn's culinary talents. Complimentary
valet parking is available in front, but regulars know to park
in the parking garage around back when stormy weather threatens.
This restaurant is a gem so don't miss it. For more information,

Food with the same quality and presentation as The Inn at Little
Washington, but at a fraction of the price. If that statement
makes sense to you, I suspect that you will quickly call this restaurant
and arrange for reservations. The menu at 2941 varies with the
seasons and is focused primarily on classic French items such
as fois gras, lamb, and duck, but there is also sufficient variation
to please the more timid patron. A pizza is commonly offered for
lunch, for example, and you can always get a good piece of salmon
at dinner. Regardless, of whether you go for dinner or lunch,
one thing that is omnipresent is the bread. Freshly made with
everything from plain white to apricot/pistachio mixed in the
dough (my favorite), it's certainly not the primary attraction
of 2941, but it does add to a delicious meal.
The wine list is well designed, but a bit modest in vintages. Nevertheless,
the mark-up is minimal compared to most places in the DC area.
Desserts and after-dinner drinks are extensive enough to please
most everyone at the table and there is a cheese offering as well
served table-side with more of that delicious bread and some
fruit. Finally, they have one of the best espressos...not burnt
or overly bitter as is so common.

2941 is a rather odd place given the it is on the ground floor of
an office building. The bar and dining area are combined into
one great hall which overlooks a lake. The fact that the bar is
not isolated has left me wondering if Mr. Philip Morris might
one day make me gag as I to enjoy another superb meal, but so far
I've been lucky. Try getting a table near the back to avoid
the hazard.
The only think lacking here is the service. The wait staff is still
in its infancy, so I'll cut them a little slack. There are
a few superlative waiters in there and the maitre d' certainly
keeps a watchful eye on things. I'm sure it will be on par with
the food in another year.
One final word, if you do decide to go, wear something nice and
keep the kids at home. This ain't no Outback!
