This is the restaurant that led the way into the emergence of Chinese/Asian
dining as a very popular dining style in Lansing. Most people
think of this restaurant as Chinese, but it is really Korean/Chinese,
as the Li family is of Chinese origin, but native of Korea.
The owner of the restaurant is a licensed Master Chef from Korea.
Master Li is widely known in other areas famous for Chinese communities,
like Chicago, as a first-rate chef who has competed and won in
highly competitive cooking contest.
Over the years, the Huapei has built a devoted clientele who come
regularly for the homey atmosphere and great food -- usually
ordered from the special menu instead of the one they hand you
as an ordinary patron.
The Hot & Sour Soup (Suan lao tang) is the best I have tasted anywhere.
Their fried and steamed dumplings are equal to anyones. They
have several dishes unique to the restaurant as creations of
Master Li. I recommend the Huapei Chicken, Korean Beef, Kam Pung
Gi (spicy chopped chicken with or without bones, which are the
traditional manner of fixing) and their very unique version
of Sweet and Sour.
