A great little alfresco dining spot to have lunch as you shop or
pass through Makawao. The tables are tucked between a yoga studio
and a massage studio/salon on the main street, back in the shade
away from the crowds. My husband and I stayed in Makawao two nights
and went to Cafe O'Lei twice because it was so yummy and enjoyable.
He had the avocado and crab sandwich, which I sampled and thought
heavenly. The first day I had the "Asian" salad, which was fairly
good though not the 'talk of the town' that the Frommer's Maui
guidebook claimed (I'd like to meet the author -- she reviews
every dish at every restaurant as esctatically as if it's the
first thing she's tried after coming off a two-week fast). I also
tried the quinoa salad, with quinoa, roasted vegetables and
olive oil over Kula greens -- quite good, and very generous servings.
The service is friendly and as fast as it can be given that there
only seems to be room in the kitchen for one cook at a time. Definitely
check this out if you're in the area.
