Yes the food was fresh and quite tasty. However, I have had much better sushi Japan Town in San Francisco.

I have eaten at this restaurant for many years and it has had many ups and downs. I've noticed a much shorter wait here since the new location of Sushi House has opened. It may be good that there is some competition in Alameda as it has pushed Kamakura to bring back their quality & service.
Recently, my visits here have been rewarding. The sushi has been fresh and the service prompt & friendly.
I think Kamakura has a special niche in Alameda with their traditional approach to their dishes and atmosphere. Since they have many other items besides sushi, it's a great place to bring out of town friends and non-fish eaters. We have had a few bad experiences in the past, but it looks like those are behind us. We have returned as customers to this homey, neighborhood restaurant.

We've been going to Kamakura for at least 6 years now, and the worst meal/fish we've ever had was "mediocre", which is more than you can say for most of the 10+ other places throughout the Bay Area we've been to. They are consistently excellent and among the lowest priced Japanese restaurant we've been to. I recommend the hamachi sashimi, white tuna with garlic, and the new york rolls.

I was shocked at the discrepency between the reviews and the place. The tuna I got was perfect, but my husband got poorly cut lower quality peices (it was chewy and tough) even though we ordered the same thing. I was given THE MOST DISCUSTING UNI(sea urchin) that was ROTTEN. It was shocking that it was served to a customer and hadn't been thrown away days ago. The softshell crab was another dissapointment. The umeshu (plum wine) was nice. The owner and the manager both were charming and attentive but our waitress was either on drugs or having a huge personal crisis and gave terrible service. To begin with our waitress asked us if we'd like to order, my husband began with our drinks and she asked us if we'd like anything to drink, she asked many times having forgotten she'd asked us two seconds ago, staring at us with bulging eyes and ran off without taking our order. We ordered negi hamachi maki as a part of dinner and she obviously didn't understand so we cl ... more

The food is the right price and you may have to wait but can always get in! We have never had a bad meal - they always give you free tea and desert wine which is always wonderful. Couldn't ask for a better time.

I used to love this restaurant. The food used to be excellent, the sushi 'neta' very fresh and 'shimatteru.' The entree seemed very authentic. However, lately I, as well as a lot of my Japanese friends, find the quality less satisfactory. The sukiyaki I had a few months ago tasted too sweet and the meat too chewy. I ordered toro nigiri recently (it was on special for close to $20), was very watery (mizzuppoi). I feel that perhaps due to the popularity of the restaurant, the preparation of food has become laxed (tenuki). As a person of Japanese descent and representing Japanese friends, I wish that Kamakura have more pride in maintaining the quality of their cuisine. Zannen.
