One of the few places you can get a great pastrami or reuben sandwiches. The portions are HUGE so if you are a light eater, split a sandwich or expect to take half home.

Very busy when the theater or ballet season is on, both before and after the performances. Also busy on the weekend.

The neighborhood does get a touch sketchy at night but as a result, parking can usually be found by circling the block perhaps once or twice.

I really like it - efficient service, consistent food, fair prices for large portion. Oh yes, the matzo ball soup is great for light eaters.

Every time we cannot decide where to go, because everyone wants something different to eat, we end up at Max's Opera Cafe. The food is consistently good and we have yet to be disappointed. This last visit had us ordering the low carb ruben, which is enough for two people to share. The hamburgers are cooked to order, rare even, and are huge. You need to remember to ask for the coleslaw and kosher dills, and with the french fries it's a great meal. In my opinion, the desserts are the best thing on the menu here. My favorite is the Niagara Falls cake, but I have tried just about everything and the portions are substantial and the quality is excellent. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone coming to the city as you can get whatever you want to eat, it will be good and the prices are very reasonable.

The Ribs are my favorite and far superior to Big Nate's BBQ. A complete meal can be made on the appetizers alone. The Bartenders are usually very good. Max's offers a very diverse menu sure to please all tastes and budgets.

i thought this place was original. i didn't mind the food so much as the other reviewers. i personally like their more vegetarian dishes. it's not like i've chosen vegetarian dishes. they just sounded better than the meat dishes. i really like how the waiters/waitresses sing. i personally enjoy these types of music. so live music was a plus. i always anticipate my server to sing. i even took my family here, because i thought the ideas of workers singing was innovative.

The place for new yorker, and for anyone else who loves food. Great deli meets, good atmosphere. The place is usually so full (popular I guess :) so you do have to wait. Usually when I go there for dinner, I skip lunch. And yes, the waiters can sing.

If parking is easier, I would be at Max's more often. I am into Opera and Musical and love those singing waiters and waitresses. I can't think of anything better to go with a good meal than free, live entertainment. I have really learned my lesson when it comes to ordering food at Max's. It is almost impossible to have a starter, and entree, and dessert all by yourself. Their portions are huge. Their onion ring is donut size. When I saw that on the menu, I thought to myself, nah, it can't be. But I was wrong, very wrong. They are really the size of a donut. I have also ordered the potato skins before, and I could not finish the order even if I have that as my dinner. The good thing is, they do serve half orders on certain items. I can't really say much about the entrees because I always end up having to take it home after I've had the starter. When it comes to dessert, well, I'm sad to said that I haven't had a chance to try them. After the huge starters and barely taking a bite of my entree, dessert is out of the question. I have heard very good things about them though. And they are famous for their huge 5 layer cakes. I really like Max's menu because it offers a wide range of food, from chicken matzo ball soup to Philly cheese steak sandwich. I recommend this place to anyone who is going to go with at least one other person. That way, at least you can share the food. I'm not too fond of Max's for lunch, but recommend it for dinner and for drinks. I have been there without reservation and was able to get seated within 20 minutes or so. But I do recommend reservations for groups and during busy time (weekends and nights).

If you leave Hungry, it's your fault. The Deli Meats are best. The portions are huge. The Deserts are to die for. The Opera Singing Wait staff are occassionally good, but always entertaining. The Chinese Chicken Salad is very good. The Ribs are my sons favorites and far superior to Big Nate's BBQ. A complete meal can be made on the appetizers alone. The Bartenders are usually very good. Great for a little late night heartburn after the Symphony. Wine list is just OK. There is plenty of parking in the building.

I like Max's Opera Cafe for their desserts. It's the only place to go if you are looking for really good, don't-forget-the-calories, must-have-just-one-more-bite kind of sweets. The atmosphere is quaint, and the people there really "treat" you right!

i'm only giving this restaurant 2 stars. i'm usually a very generous critic, i must admit. so 2 stars isn't all that good. i feel a little guilty giving them 2 stars because it seems like i always heard of max's opera cafe as being a really great place. it's not too bad. i will give a 1 star rating when i think a restaurant deserves it. well, i've ordered sandwiches here. the reuben sandwich was too soggy, too greasy. messy yes, but that should be acceptable. the latkas were didn't really please me all that much. the key lime pie, ok. the food is just really heavy and leaves me with this unhappy, unhealthy feeling. this place is really popular though. the servers can sing. oh, one thing i did like!!! check out their selection of mustard! yes, indeed. go just for the mustard!

This place serves super-sized portions of everything. I can't recall a time when I was able to order food and dessert, it's always one or the other. There is never room for both. Good sandwiches, burgers, pasta, salads and desserts. This is a great place to grab a bite before or after opera/symphony/movie. I'm glad they revamped their menu to feature two different sizes of salads because in the past I was never able to finish the large salad. Now I can order their mid-sized salad and have some chance of finishing it. Their assortment of breads are pretty decent too. In the evenings, the servers take turns singing and they're usually pretty good.

I like some of the Max's locations, but this one is a total loser. The layout and traffic pattern seems confusing even to the servers, who too often have said "oops, wrong table. sorry."

A little bit of New York City in San Francisco. Have been going to this place for years and never experienced a disappointing meal. Salads, sandwiches, hot entrees, cold entrees are all well-prepared and hearty. Very substantial portions, particularly with respect to desserts which are fun to share (the Niagara cake is amongst my favorites). The ice teas are fun too -- brewed in a little individual teapot and then poured over ice in a glass (you can brew the tea to your liking and pour when you're ready). Max's offers a very diverse menu sure to please all tastes and budgets. Good place to go to before the opera or symphony if your budget's a little tight after paying those ticket prices. Also nice to come back to afterwards for coffee and dessert (coffee has improved, but could improve some more and I wish they'd get rid of those stupid little 'half and half' mini cups). The weekend evening entertainment is either fun or intrusive, depending upon your point of view and tastes.

Here's a pretty decent Kosher deli/restaurant with the thick sandwiches, hot full meals, and carry-out counter. The food is very good and is served in an informal, friendly environment. Weekends will showcase different singers from the opera chorus to perform various arias... they are all quite good. This is a great family place offering a large selection of food to please everyone. I particularly like the Hot Corned Beef Sandwich. Check it out!
