Doidge's Cafe has closed their doors. Something to do with disagreements
with the landlord...

One of the best brunch spots in the city (San Francisco) has just
opened for dinner. Doidge's is great for casual conversation,
a little romance, and a welcome French menu. The new chef, Scott
Simms has brought a new touch of class to Doidge's by designing
a brasserie style menu. Selections are limited, but every one
of them is on the menu for a reason- they are all worth coming back
for. (Not to miss are the duck confit and the pork, both of which
will make you 'ooh' and 'aah' with delight.) His specialty is
foie gras, which I challenge any restaurant in the city to beat.
Not even Boulevard holds a candle to it. Scott has, I believe,
worked at Aquerello, Zuni and Azie-- and he is more than ready
to say hi, and bring a smile with your meal- very cute place.
RECOMMENDED DISHES: Pork, Duck confit, lobster appetizer,
foie gras, cherry galette
Note- only beer and wine served

Doidges manages to repeat a grand old Marina/Cow Hollow tradition -
slightly overpriced mediocre food with no parking for miles around and
a huge line. True, the food is fine, and true, the service is good,
but the waiting involved is absurd. There are better places close by,
with less waiting. Eggs are fine, with a decent benedict and
acceptable, if unimaginative omelettes.

A bit mystified by the 5-star ratings. Yes, the food is good or maybe
a little better,
but the portions, at least on the egg orders, are pretty skimpy. An
order is supposed
to be two eggs, but if there were two eggs in my order of scrambled,
then there's an
egg size below "small" that I was previously unaware of. When I
ordered rye toast, I was
assured that their rye bread is "specially baked" for them. What
arrived looked and tasted
like packaged rye bread As such, it was not nearly as good as what you
can buy at Trader
Joe's, an compared to the fresh-baked rye at Max's, it's not even in
the same league.

Consistently very good food and service. The french toast with
berries is my favorite but no brunch entree has ever disappointed
me at Doidge's. Be sure to make reservations and even with them,
you might end up waiting a bit, but it will be worth it.
Parking is hell, leave enough time for a search.

I've been getting tired of my usual breakfast
haunts, so on the basis of reviews here, I tried
Doidges. It's my new favorite in town. Everything
was great, including the atmosphere. This place is
no secret, and no wonder. We had no problem getting
a table mid-week at about 10:00 am.
One thing to remember -- it's nearly impossible to
find a place to park near there, so allow time for a
hunt if you must drive.

As far as Breakfast/Brunch is concerned, this place greatly
deserves 5 stars. Reservations for a table are REQUIRED
for the weekend, but the counter will accomodate up to
8 people, usually singles or couples for walk-in. The
pancakes are the best in town, with honorable mention to
the French toast loaded down with fresh fruit and berries.
The omelettes and baked eggs are the lightest and fluffiest
anywhere, my favorite being the corned beef hash omelette.
Doidge and his colleagues are at the top of thier game in
this small, intimate space on Union street (at Fillmore).

Only had breakfast there and it was good, but nothing to
go out of your way for. The Hollondaise sauce on the Eggs
Benedict was tasty; but they got a little cute with the
new potatoes. They tasted more like rosemary than like
potatoes.

A well known local haunt for residents of the Cow
Hollow end of Union Street.
Visiting from the U.K. following a tip,
I can highly recommend the breakfast menu.
Background classical music, mature attentive
staff, open kitchen with bar style seating to
view the chefs at work.
Great choice of freshly cooked food. A San Francisco
classic. A must on anyone's list for breakfast.
