This is probably one of the best places to dine before the symphony
or the opera. But make your reservation early! If you let them
know that you've got theater tickets, they'll make
sure that your food is ready in a timely fashion and that you're
out the door in time to make the show - all without rushing you!
And try the fries!

Hayes Street Grill is an award-winning, neo-traditional San
Francisco seafood and fish house that specializes in fresh sustainably
caught fish and locally grown produce. It's unpretentious
and popular with patrons of the SF Opera, ballet, and the politicians
and staffers from City Hall. The crème brûlée is legendary. It's
owned by Patricia Unterman, former restaurant critic for the
San Francisco Chronicle and restaurant critic for the San Francisco
Examiner. Reservations are definitely recommended for dinner.

Came here 'cuz it was walking distance to Davies Hall. Had early
reservations, and received fair service. It's kind of cramped
and noisy inside---tight tables. Food was pretty good.
Aside from the seafood, the lamb chops were excellent. The skate
was another good dish, but it's alittle 'slimey' in case you've
never ordered it before. They don't give you alot of food, but
it is very well done.

Lets get real about this restaurant. The fish is very good but
way over priced. The owner is said to go out every day and hand pick
the fish. This is probably true. The dishes are flat. I had Sautéed
Salmon which came with a choose of sauce. The sauces are not anything
real fancy. I had the Beurre Blanc sauce. (just a wine butter sauce)
When the dishes came out I had a piece of Salmon on my plate with
a side of sauce and a bowl of French fries. This cost $18. The bill
for our party of four came out to be almost $90. None of us had Alcoholic
Drinks. I will say the fish was real good and the service was excellent.
I just felt that for that price they could have put a few Veggies
on the plate.

This place is amazing!!. My wife and I walked in about 5:30 and
the place was nearly empty. Even though we had reservations for
7:45, we had toured our way to near exhaustion and asked if they
could seat us early. We were told that all the table would soon
be filled and were offered seating in the bar area, next to the
door. While we were having our coktails, the people started arriving
as though a bus or two had arrived and, by 6:00PM, the place was
packed. Service did not suffer, even at the bar. The food was excellent
and the server excellent and knowledgeable about the wines.
This is a destination restaurant!!

Entrees are priced at the high end of range noted and some beyond.
Entrees are good to very good although presentation and flavors can
run on the bland side. Overall, good fish and seafood and if you
tell your waitperson that you need to get to the opera or symphony
and the start time of the performance, they'll get you out the door
on time. Haven't yet tried the shuttle since I didn't know about
it (no one mentioned it to me during any of my visits).

Fish house behind Symphony Hall. They offer relatively
simple dishes, to preserve the flavor of the fish. They
offer some interesting sauces that you can match to a
range of fish, plus some special preparations. Good, but
I have been disappointed on occasion by the quality of
the fish; some of it seems frozen, but there's no
indication on the menu.

This is definitely a San Francisco seafood experience. The concept is
simple: Select from a rounded list of grilled fish (sea bass, tuna,
swordfish, etc..) and then choose a sauce to accompany it on the side
(roasted pepper and clarified butter, garlic, herbs, oohhh). To my
surprise, everything is served with delicious french fries, which
proves to be a novelty for anyone donning a tuxedo or cocktail dress
en route to the opera (to which a free shuttle will whisk you off in
time for the overture). Try to plan enough time for their yummy creme
brulee.

My favorite seafood restaurant in San Francisco. The
food and drinks are excellent. The decor reminds me of
New England. The service is friendly and professional.
It can be hectic before curain time so if you have a
choice do not go befor curtain call on theater nights.
