Good place for diner food. The roast beef Au jus is a throw back to simpler
times.. Malted shakes are great though a tad expensive 7.95 (2.50 my
younger days). Service is great eager and quick, .A nice place to take
a date. Outdoor seating for fresh air. Good onions rings. You get extra
miles if you use a credit card for United airlines frequent flyers.
Chef Salad fresh big and tasty.

I have never eaten the food but the ice cream is the best around.
Very sweet and generous portions.

I only come here for the ice cream. Before it burned down, it was
cheaper. But I am glad it is back. My favorite is the Tan & Black.
When I was an undergrad, we used to get the kitchen sink which is
an obscene amount of ice cream for a lot of people to share. I don't
think I would do that anymore since I can't take that much
ice cream anymore. Also avoid weekend nights, it is impossible.

Loved Fenton's and was so glad that it is reopened after shutting
down for 1-1/2 years to renovate from a fire. The place looks a
lot nicer and the service is friendlier. The place was full of
customers even on a Wednesday late afternoon. Even with all the
improvements, we won't be coming back to Fenton's as
regularly. The sauce was grainy instead of the old smooth fudge
of years past. The price is higher -- possibly higher than Ghiradelli's
Square. Higher price, lower quality, no more of the old Oakland/Berkeley
charm + long wait = we will be going to the City instead of Fenton's
more often for our ice cream fix.

It's important that the old reviews no longer be taken into
account.

Two years ago, Fenton's burned down. It was set on fire by
a disgruntled former employee. It reopened in June 2003, and,
although by and large the same, there are some major differences.
Fenton's has always been known for its 50's atmosphere,
gi-normous (that's gigantic + enormous, for all 'ya)
sundaes, the jukebox, the crowd. It's ice cream (with the
exception of the divine flavor "Swiss Milk Chocolate)
is mediocre, but the size and atmosphere have made up for it.
Since it has re-opened, Fenton's has once again become THE
spot to go to for ice cream. There are problems though. The wait,
on Friday or Saturday nights, can be up to an hour. Sunday through
Thursday, from say 8-9.30pm, it'll still be at least 30 mins.
A lot of the clasic atmospheric pieces are gone - some wonderful
black and white photog ...

Hey, this is an ice cream place first, so don't expect to get an
outstanding meal here. Lots of kids (usually) and adults, too,
all looking for their milk and sugar fix. Fenton's has been a fixture
for years now, and there is no reason that it will change. If ice
cream is your "thing" then Fenton's might well be the place for
you...

Best ice cream around, and good sandwiches too (especially the
crab sandwich). Order the sundae first; you can always take the
sandwich to go :) In the summer you'll probably experience a line
at night, but it moves fast.

Fenton's is famous for ice cream. Don't come expecting gourmet
fare. Friendly service, great ice cream, delicious toppings,
and enormous sundaes in every conceivable combination. I've
never eaten anything but dessert there, but they also have a decent-looking
selection of sandwiches. Although I agree that they'd look a
lot more appetizing if they came with fries. How hard is it to start
making fries? It always seems croweded, but we've never had to
wait for more than a few mintues to get a table. My only objection
is the "energy surcharge" of 7% they tack on to every bill. I know
the cost of electricity is going up, but can't they just turn off
a few lights or absorb the cost themselves? It's not like they'll
be forced into bankruptcy by a few extra cents per kilowatt. And
doesn't their ice cream cost enough to cover it anyway/
