This is not an easy restaurant to review. The location is difficult, parking can be a problem and the menu is a moving target, as it changes with the seasons and the whims of the owner/chef. Don't get me wrong, it seems that these people really do know how to cook, it is just that when the menu changes, it really changes. Past culinary adventures have included Greece, India and Provence. But, as I said before, they really do nknow how to cook, so if you feel adventerous, maybe you would like to give Carta a try.

We did not have a very good time at Carta. We felt like the waitstaff treated us strangely--we requested more cashews (in April), and they made it seem like we were asking for something outrageous. Then the waitress told us they ran out. It seemed like she invented that excuse as she was standing there. The service was very slow, the food was not exceptional, and we felt like we were being discriminated against for some reason unknown to us. We would not return to Carta, despite the monthly menu changes, because there are so many other places to try in SF, that it is not worth it to us to subject ourselves to substandard treatment. Good luck to anyone else who goes there.

As the menu at Carta changes ethnicity/nationality monthly, we try to go at least once a month. And of the dozens of times we've eaten here, I honestly can say that we've NEVER been disappointed. No matter the cuisine, they always deliver delicious, high-quality, and attractively presented fare each and every visit. As far as the individual cuisines go, my personal favorites have been Southern and Mediterranean. The physical space is a bit tight, but nicely decorated (with the exception of the horse's ass painting in the front room). And although the waitstaff is generally very friendly and attentive, the pace of service can be excrutiatingly slow at times. As an added bonus, they've began handing out Carta Dining Cards, whereby they punch a hole in the card at each visit. Upon the fifth visit, you receive an entree (a.k.a., a "large plate" ) for free - great deal!

Carta is a truly unique dining experience in San Francisco. They offer a different menu from a different part of the world evey month; from Brazilian to Russian and almost everything in between. Their menu selection is small (usually about 4-5 small dishes and 3-4 large dishes, plus a couple of desserts) but each dish is exquisite! The restaurant is simply and elegantly decorated. We go almost every month and have never been disappointed.
