My wife and I took our daughter and husband out to their favorite restaurant and my wife and I agreed that Morton's was excellent. We all had the special of the day, a rib eye steak, which was excellent. I am anxious to try some of the other menu items. The service was excellent and the ambiance was also excellent.

I wasn't disapointed with the meal, except that I didn't feel I had got my moneys worth at the end of it. I love anything with wild mushrooms, and don't even mind if they're dried, but not see any on the menu a shame. I had been told that they used them a lot, perhaps only in season? Still, I'd go back again, but with low expectations next time. The food was pretty good, just not what I expected.

I went to Morton's for my birthday. Upon ordering I asked that the mashed potatoes be substituted for rice. I was told that "the chef does not do substitutions but you may order a side". I told the waitress it was my birthday and to please ask if the chef could find it in his heart to make the substitution. The dish I ordered is often plated in other resteraunts with mashed potaoes as opposed to rice. When our meals were served (it was a party of 6), all the entree's were brought to the table except mine. However, a cold side of mashed potatoes were brought to me, with some kind of sweet sauce poured on them. I was charged $4.00 for this "side order". My entree did not appear for a good 5-8 minutes after the others in our party. My husband was ready to say somehting when the waitress said that the chef, "was doing something special". However, when my dish arrived it was exactly the same as someone else's who had ordered the same thing. Many in our party also noticed the food was VERY salty. At the end of our meal, I was brought a piece of cheesecake but the rest of the party was not offered dessert for several minutes and by that time, we all simply wanted to leave. The location is quaint and the overall service from the waitress was good. It seemed that her biggest difficulty was dealing with the chef. I have eaten in many 4 star resteraunts around the country and on a scale of 1-10 I would rate the food a 4 (maybe) and the chef's hospitality a 1. While I hate to think this way, I couldn't help thinking that he sent cold potatoes with a sweet glaze on them, as well as my dish much later than the others, due a tempermental episode. I would not recommend this resteraunt.

One of the region's best restaurants, Morton's Bistro is simply the finest place to dine in Salem. Steve Morton uses the freshest Northwest ingredients (including wild mushrooms in season) to create a variety of remarkable dishes. If at a loss when ordering, try the chiappino. A great place for a first date or a 50th anniversary dinner. Don't forget to try a new wine from the extensive wine list. Steve doesn't advertise but reservations are still a must.
