I cannot add much more than the other folks who have reviewed this place
except to say that things have changed a little bit in the fifteen years
that I have been coming here . . . in addition to Pabst on tap, they have
been serving Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on tap for at least five years now.
I like Pabst on tap and when I want one, this is where I go but I love Sierra
Nevada and it goes great with a "Special" and a pickled egg,
too. One more thing . . . I don't think anyone mentioned the pool
room. They have a pool room in the back that is big and roomy but also very
old fashioned. It's like taking a time machine back to the early
twentieth century.

I have been coming to Joe Jost's since I was in classes at Long Beach
State. (That was before it was known as Long Beach State University).
It has not changed one bit, and that is the way I like it!! We have now retired
and moved to southwest Colorado, yet we still cannot get a "Joe's
Special" anywhere else on the planet, except at Joe Jost's,
so we make it out there at least 3 times a year just so I can have my "fix"
of that special sandwich....it is soooooooo good!!!
The people that frequent the bar are still about the same ie., friendly
and talkative, and the great people behind the bar are always willing
to get you want you want, and also to take the time to explain what it is
they do to all the "newbies" that enter their doors.
We will be there again this November, and I can hardly wait to take my
first bite of "Joe's Special"....yummmmmm!

I wrote this review 4 years ago, and darn it, I want credit for it....

Having gotten that off my chest, I want to add that nothing, absolutely
nothing, has changed at Joe Josts. Still the fresh roasted peanuts,
still the Pabst on tap, still the pickled eggs, everything is
still good. Even the little fingerprint I left in the dust over
the booth where we usually sit is there, after all these years.
Maybe the place has gotten even more packed with people, though.
So, here is the original review.

Four generations of my family have gone to Joe Jost's (I have
a picture of us; my grandfather, father, me and my 4 year old son).
The menu is very limited: liverwurst sandwiches, hot dogs and
the Joe's Special (a polish sausage on rye), pickled eggs,
pretzels and fresh-roasted peanuts. Pabst Blue Ribbon on tap
and little bottles of root beer for minors. But I absolutely love
this
place, and the patrons, like me, ...

A definite tradition! Great sandwhiches & cold beer. The atmosphere
is the thing!

A Long Beach tradition, this is a place you go to for atmosphere
as much as anything else. It has been a place where families have
gone since the early 1900's (est. 1924) to have a beer, a Joe Jost's
Special Sandwich, and talk shop with other friends and families
(the place is packed Easter Sunday). My Grandfather went here,
my Father went here, I go here, and my son will get a taste of this
place when he is born!

place, and the patrons, like me, are fiercely loyal. One wall is covered with
pictures of places around the world where Joe's regulars have been, all with
Joe Jost t-shirts on.
There is something undefinable about this place: at Joe's it is suddenly
possible to eat three pickled eggs, two Joe's Specials, peanuts and pretzels
and of course schooners of Pabst, which cannot be done at home.
Joe Jost's is one of the great landmarks of Long Beach, at least in my mind.
