Well, it's not cheap here, and reservations are a good idea, but the Union Square Cafe does not disappoint. There are excellent wines, and I'm a fan of the roasted vegetables when I'm not in a meat mood. It's a good place to bring out-of-town friends who are easily impressed, as they think it's heaven compared to Omaha, Nebraska, or Irving, Texas. One can sometimes dine with celebs, too --- one evening some time back, I caught a glimpse of Nigella Lawson, the English cooking guru. This was before she was famous. I laughed out loud recently when I caught her show and she mentioned an appetizer/bar snack that she'd eaten at the Union Square Cafe! It's just a small world after all. less

With low ceilings, wooden panneled walls and bare floors, this place can become very noisey when packed, which is often! The food is serious here, be sure to order the black bean soup, and the roast suckling pig, or try the beef dishes. This restaurant is outstanding! Reservations needed. less
