The Snail is a great Thai restaurant near the University of Chicago campus. Instead of getting the usual Pad Thai like you do in every Thai restaurant you go to, be adventurous and try something different, like the Fish Cake appetizer. I don't know what they're made out of, but these cakes have the texture of potato pancakes and are delicious. I had a seafood and noodle dish, the name of which escapes me now, but it had healthy portions of scallops, shrimp, and squid. It was supposed to be a spicy dish, but it lacked the necessary kick I like. You can remedy that with some of the sauces they have on the side for spring rolls and the like. less

This is the one with the good soup. The coconut and galangal soup is my favorite, but the lemongrass soup gives it tough competition, especially if you have a cold. My favorite memory of the Snail is the lemongrass soup my husband brought home when I had flu and a high fever. What more could I have asked?
The curries are rich and spicy; last time I had the duck curry, which was opulent with roasted duck meat and reddish coconut-and-spice-scented sauce.
I heartily recommend this place.
