My husband and I have been to The Slanted Door restaurant dozens of times. We LOVE it! The food is great. The service is friendly, if somewhat hurried (when it is crowded). Here are some tips: COME FOR LUNCH! They open at 11:30am for lunch and since they don't take lunch reservations, it is easy to get in. And most of the same things are on both the lunch and dinner menu. If you want to go for dinner, you really need to make a reservation a week or 2 ahead, unless you want to wait for a cancellation or for one of the 4 bar stool chairs to free up.
Here are some suggestions: The spring rolls are wonderful with their homemade peanut sauce. The grapefruit and jicama salad with candied pecans is teriffic. The steamed sea bass is out of this world! The sauce alone is fantastic and the fish melts like butter in your mouth. These are some of my favorites, but you mostly can't go wrong at this restaurant, no matter what you choose.
One time when we were there, Alice Waters was having her birthday party upstairs. When the chef of Chez Panisse dines at another restaurant, you know it is good. (Another time we were there, Bill Clinton was there, while he was president, but I don't think that you should hold it against the restaurant, since it was probably his daughter who recommended it -- she was with him) less

I can't understand why people compared this place to Le Cheval!!Le Cheval doesn't deserve to be the same breath as the slanted door. The food here more refined Vietnamese fusion compared to the garbage Le Cheval being putting out. Yes, the portions are on the tiny side but compared to Ana Mandaras, the price is a little cheaper for what you get. The place do tend to get noisy (I could barely hear my waitress) but it's not a place you would bring a date to. Instead, bring a bunch of people and enjoy the wonderful ambiance. Don't miss out on the fantastic wine selection also. less

This place is packed every night. It's been featured on TV. People talk about this place ALOT! I'm going to give credit where credit is due. THIS PLACE IS AWEWSOME!! The food is TASTY! It's not authentic, but hey its a great place.
BTW, I frequently go to LE CHEVAL, places in the Sunset. I like those places as well. less

I've tried MANY MANY MANY vietnamese resturants as well as homemade from MANY of my Vietnamese friends' moms and grandma's...(trust me I've tried it up and down the California coast...PHO's...trendy PHO's..seven course beef joint...Bume Bu Way's...french Vietnamese...bakeries....I've seen them all...even styles from Louissianna)...I love Vietnamese food! I feel I'm kind of an "expert."
Slanted Door SIMPLY ROCKS!!!!!! It's not tailored towards vietnamese people though...TRUST me when I say this. The only vietnamese people I see there are young hipsters. Your traditional crowd probably would not approve.
I'm giving this place a four, I don't know what's keeping me from giving it a five. Maybe it's a little pricy and I don't see some dishes I would like to see them re-invent.
Almost everyhting is exceptinal!! The atmosphere is is TOPS in SF. Reservations are HIGHLY reccomended, but here's a secret, someone always cancels and so you can fit a small party of 2 to 4 easily, if you wait about 30-45 minutes.
My hats off to the chefs...it takes alot of imagination and experience to make this one of a kind restaurant... For all you Le Cheval fans....that place is AWESOME as well. Both places are great...if you can pack them in, you are doing something right. less

I kept hearing from people how great The Slanted Door is. It took me 3 tries just to get a table (its always VERY busy!), and I was very disappointed. Small portions, high prices, and the food is only so-so. I can't believe that I paid almost $80 for 2 people (without any alcohol!), and I could have spent half that for a great meal at Cafe Cuvee just around the corner! (Not Vietnamese, but still a great restaraunt.)Don't waste your time here, its just not worth it. Now Le Cheval in Oakland - that's a great Vietnamese restaraunt! less
