I had guests from Japan who wanted to eat Chinese food but who I couldn't take to my typical delicious "dive" places. We decided to take a chance on Shanghai 1930. A real score. It has the high end feel (beautiful decor, interior decorator use of color, accents and Chinese "antiques"), excellent service and really good California/influenced Chinese food. You can break the bank and do the whole fresh snapper, live from the tank shrimp, etc., at $30 per plate, but you can also stay in the $12 per plate range and 6, with wine, only ran $225, including tax and tip. An excellent place to take people who want a fancy restaurant but still want delicious, balanced Chinese food. less

Overall one of my favorites. The food is continually delicious and impecibly prepared. The duck is excellent as well as the shrimp you eat whole. Many, many good items on the menu, we have never had one thing we did not like. Very nice atmosphere ... more

the best dish is the "fish on a vine."   this is nouveau chinese cuisine.   it's sometimes not so traditional, but it is definitely good.   this restaurant has a very romantic atmosphere, dimly lit, located underground, in the embarcadero district of sf.   the service is very, very friendly n' attentive.   the manager helped us select a good wine n' served us some of our dishes.   we ordered the price fixe dinner, where u select some appetizers, a soup, some entrées, some veggies, n' a dessert, but that was 2 much fud!   i reccomend just ordering from the menu.   the "jade n' ebony" was a delicious more traditional chinese dish: bok choy n' shiitake shrooms.   still "fish on a vine" was the best! a fried fish w/ wine sauce n' grapes.   it was very well presented.
