Since chef Scott Newman left head up Mark Miller's Coyote Cafe in Santa Fe, Rubicon has slipped. The Rubicon wine list is still world class, but the food needs some serious work. Rubicon is a decent place to eat, however falls into average given its reputation and prices. The wait staff seem to have rather negative attitudes, as if they have so much more going on in their lives than manually serve patrons. Visited there on Saturday July 13th. Had an excellent meal. There were four people in our party. Two of us ordered the rabbit, one the duck, and one the braised OX tails. We tasted all dishes between ourselves. Everything was outstanding. Very intensely flavored entrees. Bread was also excellent. I'm sure all of the dishes on the menu are winners. For dessert we had between us the cream brulee, Berry shortcake with cinnamon ice cream, and apple tart with apple sorbet. and one again they were all excellent. The berry shortcake was my favorite. The atmosphere, the wood decor make for a very nice restaurant experience. The only thing that prevents me from giving this restaurant a five star rating is that I felt the appetizers were not a good value. The rock shrimp ravioli was $13.00 for two very small ravioli's. Surely they could give you at least four. But overall I would highly recommend this restaurant you will not leave disappointed. less

Restaurant has a lofty cozy feel with brick walls and beautiful, dark wooden trim, tables, booths, and large staircase (to the 2nd floor). I thought it was a little noisy and our table for four was very small- requiring constant rearrangement of settings with every dish that came. Service was excellent- friendly and knowledgable, and the food arrived quickly within minutes (we had a later seating). Appetizers $11-16, entrees $21-25, desserts $7. Extensive wine list. -Definitely recommend scallops with truffled potatoes (agree with other reviewers!) -Standout foie gras with rhubarb was excellent with very fatty taste. -Duck breast was a little undercooked and side vegetables did not go well with it -Rack of lamb portion was large, tender, flavorful and complemented by spinach and onion/bell pepper/herb saute. It was one of the better ones I have had in awhile. -Berry shortcake with ice cream was tarty, fresh, and filling. Upside down pineapple cake w/ ice cream was nice, and creme brulee ok. -I thought the coffee was a great roast. Meal seemed pricy, but you just have to order the right things to enjoy it. less

Enjoyed a wonderful evening meal on Saturday, 5.11.96. The signature fois gras appetizer was by far THE best fois gras I've ever had. In the future I think I'll have a double order for the entree. Don't miss this dish!. The rack of lamb was very, very nice. Served a true rare as requested and nicely paired with fresh spinach and baby artichokes. My dining companion ordered the house cured salmon atop thinly shaved fennel, followed by the NY steak and potatoe gratin. We both agreed that I had the winning meal. We concluded the evening with the superb ice cream trio (buttermilk-honey, vanilla malt, chococalate chip), the cheese plate (excellent), port, and coffee. While Rubicon's wine list is extensive, we brought our own wine from an extensive cellar selection at home. The corkage fee is higher than most at $15, but not inappropriate given the stature of the restaurant. The only downside to the evening was the 24 minute it took to receive our entree (from the time our appetizer plates were cleared). We were told that the restaurant was severely overbooked that evening and the kitchen is very small. To have this kind of wait when we were seated at 6:05pm was a bit of a surprise. I don't have a problem waiting when my expectations are set beforehand, just let me know before I begin to get annoyed.. The table behind us experienced similar delays and insisted speaking with the manager. Overall this was an excellent meal and yes, we would consider returning. less
