This was a treat for the whole family...we came here to celebrate 3 birthdays (all in the same week)...six of us were treated to a wonderful variety of entres with great wine to match. This is indeed a great neighborhood bistro, with a world class wine cellar to match. For those of us in the burbs, we often don't remember how good the food is and how much fun there is in the Marina district (or Cow Hollow for that matter). Do yourself a favor and make reservations here for your next special night out...whether its an intimate dinner for two, or a gathering of family members for the annual night out...you wont be disappointed. less

The pleasant, snug atmosphere of Plumpjack lends it the ambiance of a true neighborhood bistro to which regulars congregate. The food is wonderful--the flavors are rich but not overpowering, the ingredients impeccably fresh. But for those in the know, one doesn't come to Plumpjack's for wildly imaginative food. The food serves as a base to complement fine wine--Plumpjack's true calling (there's an excellent and surprisingly reasonable wine store by the same name half a block away). The back of the menu usually has the wine list. Forget this list and ask for the reserve list--here lie the treats of the evening. The list is expansive and the prices are ridiculously low--most are listed at retail, not restaurant prices. Rumor has it that there is a third wine list containing items which would send a oenophile into a frenzy. Properly armed with fine wine, you are now prepared to venture forth into your meal. The Plump Jack Cabernet is fine at only $5 a glass. The service was also great. We got a complimentary glass of wine while we waited. I heard they also own the Balboa Cafe down the street. less

Recently, I've been on a whirlwind tour of the top rated restaraunts in the bay area, and excepting a fixed price new years eve dinner, my meal at the plumpjack was without equal. My starter (bruschetta with white beans and wild mushrooms) was very tasty, if a little tough to eat. My main course (chicken over couscous with sweet potato chips, I think) was amazing, both in flavor and in texture. The wine prices were the best I've seen _anywhere_. They had grocery store prices on all the bottles I recognized, especially including Rombauer Chardonnay (beautiful chard - best I found in a two day wine country tour) at ~20/bottle. In the background, their phone rings off the hook, but the service was first rate (I got a new basket of bread within 30 seconds of taking the last piece). I'll be back here well before I return to the Cafe at Chez Panisse. less
