The place was packed but we managed to get a booth pretty quickly. The server was pleasant enough but seemed harried and distracted. We asked for cheese in our Club sandwiches but it came without. The sandwiches were large but the turkey wasn't the best quality. The fries were average. All in all, Pine Crest got the job done, but I've had much better. less

The Pinecrest is certainly a greasy-spoon type restaurant, if nothing else. Outside, a sign proclaims "The Best Breakfast in San Francisco!" Ummmmmmm, well, not exactly. I have seen three-egg omelets that were smaller, but not by much. And sausage-and-eggs (I was emphatically informed that 'We do NOT poach eggs!") came with four little carbonized protein-tube things, and eggs that actually required a knife to cut through. I wish I had been able to see the toast being made, because it sure looked like each slice had been individually immersed into a pot of melted butter. Breakfast for two was nearly $30. Extremely depressing having to watch a college-age girl outside panhandling for money, as I could have given her a $20 and still had enough for a couple of cappuccinos and a bagel or two for breakfast. less

If you?re staying in the vicinity of Union Square, this is a fun place to have breakfast. Sit at the counter and watch the cooks and waitresses do their thing! Watch 20 pounds of hash browns go on the grill. How do they keep those over easy eggs from sticking on that no non-stick grill? Coffee?s hot and food?s cheap and in San Francisco, the latter makes Pinecrest a real find! less
