I have been going to Old South for about ten years now, and still enjoy the hot links. The one thing that I have found about barbeque is that it not only is the style regional, the appeal is very personal. Some consumers of barbeque like certain styles, textures and flavors and other individuals don't like that particular style. So be it! The Old South BBQ is wonderful. Charles runs a tight ship and can always be relied upon to serve only the best BBQ around. Even when Flint's was just down the street, they really didn't give Old South a run for the money (and now guess who is still in business?). Yep, this is the place to go for very good BBQ, with three kinds of sauce available (mild, medium, and Watch Out!) I am addicted to the hot links, which are smoked with just enough snap to get your attention. When they are available (and the quality meets his standards), Charles has his own special way the beef ribs (wonderful, when done just right). Yep, Old South has earned my seal of approval. Give the plase a try, and I do hope that you'll be pleased! less

Since Flint's closed thisis THE place for BBQ in San Leandro, and beats anythingthis side of E&J's ... and is in some ways even better,consistently tender and flavorful. We've eaten herefive times, and never had less than a wonderful meal.The hot sauce is wonderful, but the medium alsohas a nice kick to it - and don't miss the beans andcornbread.Very friendly service; family run business. less

Felt like having bar b que. Neighbors and I were looking for something different and found this place reviewed so off we went. There were four of us and each ordered something different. Ribs, turkey, chicken, hot links, cornbread, coleslaw, potatoe salad, pork slices. They have 2 and 3 item meals with sides to go with it. The lemonade was great not too tart or too sweet. Everyone at our table was very pleased, comments like just falls off the bone. We tried the mild, medium sauces and asked for the hot. Very flavorful but not perceived as hot. The folks were very friendly and chatted. The chatting part really turned out to be wonderfully distracting as we left and none of us had remembered a tip, We definity have to double it next time back. I felt really bad about that. To a person everyone really enjoyed their meal. Might be hard to spot - it is on your right if you are coming up from Fremont on 14th, it is located on a corner shopping center, very small, and very clean. less

Let me start off by explaining that I don't agree with the accepted rating system used by others in this restaurant guide. There's no way you can compare Masa's in SF or Chez Panise in Berkeley with "Old South Bar B Que". For the guide to be really useful, there should different standards for different types of dinning experiences (ie best low cost restuarant for under $15, best for under $25 etc.). Notwithstanding the above, this is one great rib joint. I felt at loss after Emile Villa's closed in town. Now, I know where to go for great ribs, good side dishes and superb pies (their sweet potato pie is to die for). If you just want good down home food without any frills, this is the place for you. Also, they will deliver (min. order $15). This is a terrific alternative to Domino's pizza. less

Damn good BBQ! The links are wonderful, "home made", moist and flavorful. Other BBQ's links in the area seem too dry. After trying the food here there is disagreement in my household. The food here is very representative of deep south bbq. The standard for that in the Bay Area remains Doug's in Emeryville, which this place reminds us of quite a bit. I found my pork ribs dry and overdone and would gladly drive the few extra miles to Doug's. The other party found the chicken and ribs more tender than Doug's, and the drive a lot shorter from where we live (Alameda). What we did agree on was that the potato salad was really bad. less
