The Ol' Kettle is a nice diner-style place on the north side of Hwy 41 about three-fourths of the way through town (Google Maps is right this time). After spending a night at the Queen's Inn and drinking way too much wine, I had breakfast at the Ol' Kettle and was very pleasantly surprised. The menu is pretty typical diner fare, but anyone offering homemade corned beef hash has got my attention. After struggling mightily between that and the Tamale Scramble (sounded delicious: broken-up tamales with eggs, ortegas, onions and cheese - will have to try that at home) I went with the hash and poached eggs which was superb. My server was a darling girl, wish I could remember her name but there you go. There are some little gifty-type things for sale at the register, including some empty Sutter Home airline size wine bottles with their caps punctured for use as salt and pepper shakers. I imagine that there are people who buy such things. Anyway, I left full and happy and I would recommend the Ol' Kettle to anybody passing through Oakhurst. less
