I went to Mary Mahoney’s last night for a pre-valentines date. This was my first visit to this establishment. The menu looked great with steaks and seafood. The place has a nice New Orleans ambiance. Being from New Orleans and having heard of this restaurant for quite some time, I was looking forward to this dining experience. Unfortunately, the service was absolutely horrible and I will NOT be back. It began as slow service to non-existent. The waiter was with us in a timely matter and took our order, however he failed to mention the night’s specials as we learned by overhearing other waiters. The appetizers came out quickly... The crab cakes were delicious and had a side some sauce on the side, which complimented the crab cakes perfectly. I asked the waiter about the sauce, he said it was “just crab sauce”. Not quite what I expected, but ok….. Our salad was on time, but he did not ask or return with cracked pepper (as other waiters were offering their customers). After a few minutes, the entrée’s appeared. We both ordered the stuffed snapper, which was pretty good, but unfortunately, my guest’s snapper was not completely cooked as discovered at the end of the meal. We did not complain, as we were already quite full. The waiter did not check on our table but once during the meal. When he did show up, long after we were done, he asked about dessert. He seemed knowledgeable about the dessert menu. He said he would be right back to take our dessert order. We waited at least 10 minutes for him to return. When he did, he asked, “did they take your dessert order”. “THEY” WHO!?!?! We ordered the bread pudding but he did not ask if we wanted coffee, which I wanted, but at this point did not want to wait longer for it to track him down. He brought the dessert out fairly quickly. The bread pudding was exceptionally good. Then there was another 10-15 minute wait to get the check. Meanwhile, people seated after us had finished the meal and was leaving. The hostess came into the main dining room several times and glanced at our table, she even asked a few tables about their dining experience, but avoided our table. We finally got the check and another wait… We waited at least 15 more minutes for him to pick up the check. I was fed up and got the hostess. She was not apologetic and said she would have someone run it. It was brought to our table shortly after. Now, I generally leave a good tip for good service. For such a nice restaurant, I expect impeccable service. I would’ve gotten better service at the waffle house down the street. This guy had the potential of getting a $20 tip from me that night, but instead, he got ZILCH. Overall, the food was pretty good, but the service was so horrible, I will never go back. If you go for the food, be sure to NOT have a waiter named "Boston" serve you. less

The original structure was built in 1737 and is among the oldest buildings in the southeastern United States. The restaurant opened in the mid-1960s and quickly became a favorite for both locals and visitors. The Old French House offers fine dining; the cafe is casual and features a mix of fine dining, sandwiches, po' boys, and the like. Within walking distance of the Mississippi sound, both were heavily damaged by Hurricane Katrina on 29 August 2005. The fine dining restaurant re-opened in December of 2005; the cafe is expected to re-open at some point in 2006. Mary Mahoney's has tremendous ambiance, a mixture of old brick and old wood, with most tables looking into the historic district of the city. It also offers private rooms for groups, and many organizations celebrate events with a luncheon or dinner at Mary Mahoney's. The courtyard is graced by a massive ancient oak thought to be at least a thousand years old. Prices at the fine dining restaurant vary greatly, running from the $20-$30 range for lunch and considerably more for dinner. Prices at the Cafe are significantly lower. Service tends to be slightly slow, but all dishes are prepared "from scratch" and the waitstaff is both knowledgeable and friendly. The fine dining restaurant tends to emphasize seafood with a Creole or Cajun twist, but these "twists" are not excessively done. Typical dishes include crab cakes, broiled shrimp, and various seafood platters; steaks and similar fare are also available. I recommend reservations for both lunch or dinner at the fine dining restaurant, which is usually crowded; the cafe, does not accept reservations and operates on a first come, first served basis. The fine dining restaurant is open for lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday. In the past the Cafe is open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, and will like return to those hours when it reopens. less

The prices are quite high and the food is just as good elsewhere. I will say that the service is wonderful and the surroundings are very nice. Bad points would have to be too many shells in the seafood and veges tend to be over cooked. I suspect it isa case of the newer generation just living on the old deserved reputation but not quite keeping up with it. sorry less

This is our favorite restaurant of all! The atmosphere is outstanding and the location is of historical significance. All the entrees are top notch and the bread pudding is to die for. Don't vist the Gulf Coast without a visit to Mary Mahoney's! ... more

A wonderful restaurant, featured 40 years ago in a movie about New Orleans: A House Is Not A Home. Has not changed a bit over the years, thank goodness. Wonderful, French/Creole food, in the original recipes! Pricey, but worth it. One of the only coat and tie places on the MS Coast, but still worth it. And you don't really need the C&T at lunch or dinner, but at dinner it seems appropriate to the wonderful setting. If you pass this place up for the nearby mega-casino food outlet, you should be ashamed! less
