Well, Don't look at the building style from outside. When you walk inside the restaurant it appears to me that they have invest a lot of money for the renovation. Food and the service are excellent and employee awareness is great. I and my wife go to this place twice a week and top of that when ever we have a party at home I order my food from them because they know how deliver 100% customer satisfaction.
So I strongly recommend this place to everyone if you want to taste the Indian food “Maharaj is the place to visit” less

Don't be put off by the funny looking building -- this place is great! -- Breads of India, Ajanta, Khana Peena can't hold a candle to the food at Maharaj(though if it is atmosphere you are looking for this might not be your bag). As a career Indian food addict who has eaten Indian food all over the world (including all over India), I would say that this is the best Indian food I've had in Berkeley in a while. The dishes are reasonably priced, well-prepared, nicely presented and very tasty. Main dishes come with your choice of rice or Naan but for those who are confused by what to order they offer Thalis on the back of the menu (a Thali is a mixed plate which includes rice, Naan, raita, pappadams and your choice of two or three vegetarian or meat curries.) Weekday lunches and weekend days they have a delicious buffet for $6.99 to $7.99 with an assortment of vegetarian and meat curries and ALL the accoutrements. The service is friendly, attentive, professional and very helpful. They are "kid tolerant" early in the evening and provide sippy cups and high chairs if necessary. They also cater. Though, the Maharaj only recently openned it seems to be catching on, they have a steady Indian clientele (which is always a good sign) and the western clientele is picking up. I would give this restaurant five stars for the food, the service, and the authentic Indian atmosphere but I took off a star because I know that the decor and the atmosphere might not be what your average western dinner goer is looking for in an Indian restaurant. Personally I care more about food quality and taste and for that reason I will be eating at Maharaj whenever the taste for Indian strikes. less
