Me gusta la comida de Mexico. Yeh, you heard me I like Mexican food. So tonight I took on the Tex-Mex flavors of La Cantina in Neptune City. This popular shore staple offers many traditional Mexican and Southwestern favorites. For the narrow minded uncultured folks out there I am sure you can find something boring to eat on the menu like pasta or London Broil. When the weather is warmer diners can eat outside and take in the stupendous views of TFH Publications or the hustle and bustle of Highway 35. Expect a short wait if you are planning a weekend visit. La Cantina can get quite crowded. It seems that many regulars frequent this place. Everyone knew each other. The crowd did seem very jovial especially the people a couple of tables away. It was Matthew's birthday and I guess it is a family ritual to hoot and holler throughout the entire meal.
La Cantina starts its guests off with a warm heaping bowl of tortilla chips and a mild salsa. If the salsa is too tame for you masochistic freaks you can find two variations of hot sauce on your table. BEWARE, if you are eating spicy stuff and you rely on a soda to cool your palette - you will be charged for every soda you order. Yep, no free refills in a Mexican restaurant. Who ever heard of such a thing? I guess you can't have everything.
For the main event my dining companion chose the Tostada Grande ($10.99) which I guess means Big Tostada. This mammoth Tostada was filled to the brim with chicken, beans, lettuce, diced tomato, guacamole, sour cream and shredded cheese. It was a light but yet very filling dish. I decided on a combination platter. You can't ever go wrong with a combo. The combo I had was a ground beef taco, chicken burrito, and a bean and cheese enchilada with a side of rice and refried beans ($10.99). It was covered in a hot sauce. At least what they consider a hot sauce. I thought it could of been a little hotter. Wusses can order the mild sauce. Real men like myself prefer the hot stuff. I was a little turned off that sour cream didn't automatically come with my dinner. When I did request a side of sour cream my excellent server brought it over promptly free of charge. Good thing they didn't charge me extra for that. It would have spoiled my evening. On a whole, I guess you can say that La Cantina offers pretty much everything you could want at a Mexican restaurant and much more. The prices are fairly reasonable and the portions are more than abundant. So if you can deal with a small wait and a boisterous crowd I think that La Cantina may be your kind of place.

Like good Mexican food, then this is one restaurant you don't want to miss. Everything I have ever ordered from their large menu has been terrific, from Burritos and Enchalads to their great Fajitas. They have great large Margaritas and a good selection of draught beer and bottled beers. The service has always been terrific and the help all seem to care that you're there. Over all it is a great dining experience. less
