Kaze (pronouned kah'-zee) has some of the freshest sushi I've ever tried anywhere. The sushi chef is very well trained and takes special care to observe safe food preparation habits. In fact, the owner of Kaze used to be the liaison between Alaska's Dept. of Fish and Game and the Japanese fishing vessels. He knows Alaska's regulations and regularly inspects his restaurant to be certain it continually meets the highest possible standards for restaurant cleanliness and food prep standards. I'm sure this contributes to the quality of Kaze's food.
If you're looking for lunch or are new to Japanese dining, the week day lunch boxes are delicious and economical. I highly recommend the chicken teriyaki lunch box, which costs $5.95. This meal begins with a cup of miso soup, a fresh iceberg lettuce salad with Kaze's house dressing of finely grated carrots, and all of the green tea you can drink. The lunch box comes with 4 oz. teriyaki chicken, a generous portion of sticky rice, three pieces of tempura vegetables, two tempura prawns, and your choice of either six gyoza or six cucumber rolls. For an additional $1.00 you can substitute the gyoza or cucumber roll with six California rolls.
The wait staff is mostly Japanese, all whom speak English and provide excellent service. The atmosphere is quiet with soft music and soft lighting. Kaze is an excellent choice for a date, a business dinner, or any special occasion. Casual attire is acceptable. less
