The big problem I have with Kanpai is that your dining experience largely depends on your chef. They always have great food, but if you have a chef that doesn't have much experience or is just having a bad night, it can cloud the whole dining experience. The last time I ate there, we had such a chef, and the entire table complained to the manager, who really didn't do anything about it, either. This chef had no banter with us, he just cooked the food. Now, if you have a restaurant where you cook in front of the customer, it seems to me that as much as the chef's skill in cooking the food, they should have personality plus.
Try Typhoon of Tokyo in Red Bank -- they don't cook the food in front of you, but it's much quieter, the prices are lower, the portions are monstrous, and you'll never regret going. less

I eat ate kanpai every chance i get. They have some of the best food around and some of the most entertaining Chefs around also. Lunch time is much cheaper than Dinner time but the quality of the food is the same. I enjoy their Tokyo Combo which has Filet Mignon, Hibachi Chicken, and shrimp. They also have some killer fried rice. So go enjoy the Kanpai experience, you'll be glad you did. less
