WARNING: Cancer stick hell! Heard that they were began serving an animal product-less breakfast, such as tofu scramble. We checked it out. The place smelled like your common diner, omlettes and pre-frozen hash browns, and "cough", smoke. I'm glad others found items that they enjoyed, but the tofu scamble was really, really bland. The toast was the run of the mill poor quality sliced bread. Those unitiated to the wonders of a good tofu scramble may think this is trivial, but a good tofu scramble is an art form. If you're curious, check it out at the Green Cat Cafe on Olive way. Anyhow, the cigarette smoke was terrible, and basically, rude! It is everywhere. The smoke just couldn't stay in the smoking section, imagine that! One who does not smoke should not have to be a smoker against one's will. (the waitress told us the non-smoking section was safe). For this point alone, they get an "F". less

The De Luxe has been on the north end of Capitol Hill's Broadway Ave since 1962. It had it's last face lift in July 1999. It has a small, overworked staff who seem friendly enough. The place is a lot cleaner in 2000 than it was back in 1996 & 97! The burgers aren't quite as big, but they are still cooked to order (ie: if you order medium rare, you won't get a burnt hockey puck.). They are among the few places that have Roma tomatos instead of the standard beefsteak tomatos. Burgers are as good as Red Robbin--at about the same price: $6-$9 with fries. You can substitute onion rings (lightly battered, well done) for an extra $1 which they don't bother to mention. Surprisingly, for a bar, they have RC Cola instead of Coke® or Pepsi®. They also feature Cafe del Oro coffee instead of, say, Boyds or Folgers. There is no separation of the smoking from the non smoking areas to speak of-- a serious "downer." They do serve a variety of burgers, pastas and salads. Oh, and a full bar. They also seem to have a good desert menu. Reasonable handicapped access. They do take credit cards, but no checks. Parking is tough. Expect to walk a block or two on average. less
