I've been here 5 times and have sat at and eaten at the bar every time- the bartenders have great personality and are very friendly. One of the only places in Tampa that TOPS OFF their VERY large martini's. less

Up until a year ago I would say that this was one of the top spots in Tampa but things have drastically changed. New "management" who look like they should be changing my oil are running the show and they are running it into the ground. There is nothing magic about how they cook anything. Uneavenly cut steaks make for uneaven cooking and all the flavor comes from a tenderizer and a powdered charcol they coat the meat in 24 hours before they cook it. No flavor comes from the wood itself...it's just a gimmick and it makes for a lack of controlled heat which shows up in the mixed results you will get from night to night. There is not a Prime piece of meat in the place...it's choice at best! It is often accompainied by a pungent smell of sewage coming from the restrooms...I hope that's where it's coming from. The wait staff appologizes frequently for the smell and seem to have the excueses down pat so it's clearly an on going problem. I don't know what has changed but this used to be "the bar" in town with a successful business crowd. Now it looks more like a waitng room for a nursing home with desperate women wondering when the old guys Sons are coming in. The sauces they use to smother their fish (normally salmon and grouper only) and their erratic cuts of meat are all BAG SAUCES. As if hollandaise wasn't an heart stopper on its own, now it's literally a bag of trans fats on burnt beef. YUM! There are still a few waiters and bartenders from the days gone by but next to The Capital Grille, Flemings or Ruth Chris this place is a mere step up from Durango...it just has a better wine selection. What a shame and what a loss for Tampa. less

The USDA prime and choice steaks grilled on the restaurant's custom-built wood-burning pit are all harvested from 3-year old grain-fed steer, and aged for tenderness and flavor for up to five weeks before they hit the table. Loyal patrons claim the steaks benefits from a unique grilling method (derived from a Seminole Indian method using native hardwoods). Servers bring a platter of raw meats to your table so you can select your perfect cut, and all meals include an ample salad bar and a bowl of homemade onion soup. You won't find a more tender piece of meat than the 20-ounce tenderloin. In addition to steak, there are a few pork and poultry options, which are also pit-cooked. The 1000 varieties of wine available earned Charley's a Wine Spectator Award of Excellence, and servers are quick to offer suggestions. Like the service, the setting is very buttoned-up. Service is excellent, and the waiters are very knowledgable of all of the various dishes available. I'd definitely recommend this place to someone who is trying to make a good first impression on a date. less
