My opinion of the Central Avenue Cafe if not a stellar one. I do like the atmosphere, but the portions were not large for the price. The food is excellent, but as many times as I've eaten there (mostly on business lunches, when I was invited). I've never had excellent service, and as I mentioned the prices are BIG and portions SMALL. I would sum up this cafe in one word. "Pretentious". But that's what the "Laurel Elite" want, so they get to pay for it. less

Laurel, MS needed a good, friendly, gourmet restaurant and bar. This is it! Tonight I ordered the special which was Fried Green Tomatoes, topped with a nice sized filet of Mahi-Mahi, that topped with a dill cream sauce. It was amazing how the flavors blended so well, and the fish was fresh! The cajun rice was good, and the steamed mixed veggies, were well, okay. The service is excellent. They had about five waitpersons in a room with about ten small tables and a patio with three tables. The bartender was honest and told the waiter to tell me that the mix they have for frozen Margueritas is not the best, and that if he were ordering, he would order another type of cocktail. I appreciated that! My companion had the three Esses mixed grill, (my name for it). Shrimp on a skewer, grilled salmon, and southern sausage. He loved every bite. Oh, our salads were marvelous! Very fresh ingredients.
We recently dined there with a small group for a business meeting, and had a fabulous seven course gourmet meal with a different wine with each course. Fantastic!!!
