Here is the cultural center of the whole of Newtown and Southport/ Lakeview areas. This is the place, and look no further for good salads using local organic produce in season. Cafe Voltaire also doubles downstairs as a sort of nightly lyric theatre in a downstairs room, and it is part of the reason the place stays open late every night, till 1:00 AM on Sundays thru Thursdays, and till 3:00 A.M. on Fridays and Saturdays. Anyone with talent can ask to join, be it you talk to the right people about it. I find these "weekend nights in particular" a healthy alternative to pub crawling, particulary because almost everything you can possibly ingest or do in here is healthy, as well I even enjoy the "health food store" smell of the interior as it reminds me of every food co-op I've ever visited, including the nearby "Bread Shop" on Halsted and Roscoe . less
