Students from nearby UCSD duck into Cafe 976 for a quick cuppa joe, a serene spot to study and/or a respite from scary dorm food. The garden- surrounded coffeehouse (it's a real house, not a strip mall cafe) has been a staple in the San Diego bean scene for almost a decade, and in that time has created a niche in the hearts and tummies of the surrounding community. <br> "976, " as it is affectionately referred to, serves up light fare for breakfast and lunch (the kitchen closes in the afternoon) and bakery and prepared snacks through the evening. Coffee is hot, strong and fresh (and the refills are cheap.) The walls are filled with artwork by locals, some quite good and often for sale, and the cozy atmosphere makes it pleasant to sit indoors. But, if it's nice outside, be sure to plant yourself at the garden tables, the most pleasant spot for a latte and a bit of ponderance. Garden sitters be prepared -- the occasional local kitty-cat might wander up to visit. less

great coffeehouse with great coffee, great atmosphere and good food. food selection is pretty large with breakfast foods, sandwiches, soups, burritos, pizzas, quesadillas, salads... though the menu gets considerably smaller after 3pm (6 on weekends). if you're not hungry it's a great place to sit and read or study, play a game of chess, or talk with friends. plenty of indoor seating, patio seating, and seating in the garden surrounding the building. 976 also features a different local artist every few weeks. highly recommended. less

The owners of Cafe 976 converted a classic house in Pacific Beach to create this great cafe. Students and locals come to sit in one of the hardwood floor rooms with local artwork, to hang out on the wrap-around porch, or to bask in the sun in the garden seating. The cafe serves an intriguing variety of coffee drinks and has a good menu, especially for brunch (if only they would keep the kitchen open after 3 pm!). I live in PB now, but used to travel from a different part of San Diego to go there, and it was (and is) worth it. less
