Fajitas came with a good portion of chicken but the guacomole was uninspired, just some diced tomatos in a green, flavorless paste. All in all, a disapointment. less

Austin Grill is loud; as the night progresses, conversation eventually drowns out the sound of the recorded music (everything from Ry Cooder to Yellow Card). Fresh ingredients are used to create outstanding crabmeat quesadillas, "Lake Travis" nachos (with red onion, refried beans, and cheese), a daily fish special (like rockfish fajitas), Key lime pie, and excellent versions of standard fare (chicken enchiladas, guacamole, pico de gallo, and so on). The margaritas are awesome. Austin Grill's upstairs overlooks the abbreviated bar area below. An upbeat decor includes walls washed in shades of teal and clay and adorned with whimsical coyotes, cowboys, Indians, and cacti. Arrive by 6pm weekends if you don't want to wait; weekdays are less crowded. less

The Austin Grill has several DC-area locations, but the original & best is in Glover Park (commonly -- and incorrectly -- referred to as "Upper Georgetown"). The restaurant is really kitchy -- never a place that takes itself too seriously.
Opened in 1988, this Tex-Mex favorite serves terrific home-made chips & salsa (ask for the salsa verde if they don't bring it), and fantastic food all around. The drinks are exceptional; you won't find any premade margarita mixes here -- they're all made to order from scratch. My favorite is the High-Test, which is served in a shaker with a martini glass. Other great drinks are the Stars & Bars and Swirlie.
The vegetarian options aren't overly plentiful, but the ones they do have are fine by me! The folks at Austin Grill are very accommodating, so don't hesitate to ask for anything to be made "your way." Maybe I am biased toward The Grill, as I won a trip to Austin, TX from them a couple years ago. Man..was that fun!
Austin Grills can be found in Old Town Alexandria & Springfield (VA), Glover Park and downtown (DC), and Bethesda & Baltimore (MD). They also opened in Cambridge, Mass not too long ago.
What's even better -- the first Monday of every month, one or more of Austin Grill's restaurants sponsors a community organization for the evening. The organization invites their friends and supporters to dine at Austin Grill, who in turn donates one-third of the restaurant's sales after 5pm to the organization.
