The Allendale Bar and Grill known locally as the AB&G features a wide variety of steak, seafood, burger, sandwich, and dinner specials. This family owned restaurant prides itself on its award winning chili and burgers. They have Pasta Night on Tuesday's and a buffet brunch on Sunday's. Established in 1935 this rustic tavern offers up a boisterous atmosphere where guests can take in a ball game on the television or they can dig into some generous servings of pub grub. I was in my glory this night with the Mets being shown on not one but two bar televisions. We fortunately didn't have to wait for a table this evening. Presumably the AB&G retained the original tables they had in 1935. Our table was worn down and wobbly. The two of us spent a great of time trying to balance the table for six we were seated at.
The AB&G starts diners off with a complimentary bowl of popcorn. That was a nice touch. We easily could've filled up on the popcorn but we opted to sample the potato skins ($5.95), instead. We made the right choice. The crisp bowl shaped potato skins come with the cheese sauce on the side - Another nice touch. This appetizer tasted so good we felt quite confident we had done some major damage to our cardiovascular system.
For dinner I ordered and devoured the Prime Rib French Dip Sandwich Au jous accompanied by a side of steak fries ($7.95). They had my favorite cut of French Fries -unfortunately they were a little overcooked. The shaved meat sandwich made up for what the fries lacked. It was excellent and very filling. My wife ordered the Penne Dinner Special ($12.95). The penne was served with chicken, shrimp, shiitake mushrooms, artichokes, plum tomatoes, and topped with a creamy garlic sauce. Did I say topped with a creamy garlic sauce? I meant swimming, no make that drowning in a pool of garlic broth. It was tragic. I almost couldn't bear to look. It was a mess. There were vegetables, meat, and pasta trying to battle the treacherous waves of the mighty bowl of garlic sauce. "Captain, artichoke overboard port side." Those who didn't succumb to the sauce met their demise inside my wife's mouth. She enjoyed the dish with the exception of the sauce.
I can't say enough for the service. The wait staff was on their feet the entire meal. As soon as we finished a beverage our waiter was right their suggesting a refill. As soon as we finished the appetizer our waiter quickly removed our refuse and brought forth the entrees.
I wouldn't suggest the AB&G for a first date or a business lunch. I would recommend the AB&G for dinner with friends or a Sunday afternoon ballgame.
