Strike 1: Location. Very awkward, hard-to-reach parking lot bordered
by two VERY busy one-way streets.
Strike 2: Service. Visited around 2:00 p.m. on a weekday; very few customers.
We were our waiter's only table and he was extremely inattentive.
One waiter stupidly stared at me as I exited the restroom, and as I made
my way back to my table, he arose from a stool near the bar and crossed
right in front of my path, pretending to not notice me. I called him on
that immediately.
Strike 3: Food. Mediocre, and the rye bread was quite stale. Limited
authentic German menu; the "American" side of the menu
is almost as large as the "German" side!
Strike 4: Cleanliness. The ceiling is disgustingly dirty, with dust-bunnies
hanging from the air vents and black dirt surrounding them. Highly
unpleasant.
I'm third-generation Bavarian, and I wasn't amused or impressed
with Gerst Haus. I may not bother returning.

I used to order at least twice a month from them. They were runnin‘
some kinda super-duper buy-1-git-1-free special to celebrate
their 20th anniversary, or 20, 000, 000th pizza served, I ferget
which. I place order online, ensuring that I click on the option
to receive the bonus pie. 25 mins. later, one pizza arrives. I
informed the driver that I‘d ordered online, making sure that
I had "opted in" to their free-pie promo. He told me
they‘d been "having problems like that" with online
orders, and if I‘d just phone the store and speak with the manager,
they‘d make up another and get it right out to me. Yes, I still tipped
him the usual 25 to 30% that I‘ve always tipped. (After that, many
probably wouldn‘t have.)
So, I git on the horn to the PJ‘s manager, calmly and politely asking
what happened. He totally lost his temper and screamed at me:
"That‘s not MY problem! You need to deal with the people
running our website!!" Mind y‘all, this was totally unprovoked.
Stunned by this reply, I just said "okay" and hung
up.
Y‘all better believe I contacted PJ‘s corporate first thing,
by phone, the next morning. Described the problem to some CSR
who clickety-clack typed away and promised a call from someone
there soon. Following day, I git a call from some PJ‘s "regional
manager" in charge of all of Nashville, TN, who proceeded
to defend the uncalled-for rudeness of the store manager. "Well,
you must have said something to set him off like that!" "Uh,
no, " I replied. As final remedy, he mailed me one certificate
for any PJ‘s pizza, any size, free of charge, with his signature
on it, which could be used at ANY Nashville, TN PJ‘s. Deciding
that (1) there are other options in my area and (2) my local store
probably knew they‘d been "reported to corporate, "
I decided to sever my longstandin‘ relationship with PJ‘s forever.
I deleted their website from my bookmarked sites and gave the
certificate to a bud who lives on the other side of town (still
within Nashville city limits though).
Almost done with this -- bud decides to use the certificate, well
before its expiration date, at HIS local PJ‘s, right down the
street from his apartment. He calls in his order and describes
the certificate. They tell him "no problem." When
he arrives at the store to pick up, they decide they don‘t want
to honor the certificate after all, and he had to argue his case
for about 10 minutes, threatenin‘ to report THEM to PJ‘s corporate,
before they "decide" to honor the certificate and
give him his free pie.
This is a complete lesson in HOW ABSOLUTELY NOT to treat a customer,
under any circumstances, especially a regular who was always
kind and always tipped the drivers well. PJ‘s can rot in &*%@,
as far as I‘m concerned. Good thang I gotta Roma‘s nearby!

-- you can taste the wood! Pulled pork sandwich or plate is my usual
here, and it is always, consistently, juicy and smoky. The side
dishes are done right, too, whether you get fries or greens or
anything else -- never greasy, never overcooked. They stick
to their formula here, and it works. Service is VERY prompt and
personable. The room is way cool, with vintage posters, plenty
of TV's, exposed brick walls, high ceilings with beams and
ductwork -- kinda "lodge meets loft." Did I mention
easy to get addicted to this joint?

Beware -- they will nearly ALWAYS omit something from your order,
whether you placed inside or through the drive-up window. It's
a repeated problem at this location which needs to be addressed
by their corporate offices.

A truly beautiful dining room and bar in a great location. They
will shoot themselves in the foot, though, if they don't
improve service and quality control. They opened for business
in September 2004, and they're making a rather inauspicious
start. The potential seems to be there, though.

High-quality, properly prepared Southern food. My mother,
visiting from Chicago, and I had dinner here -- her first catfish
dinner. Homemade cole slaw, pinto beans in gravy and hush puppies
are delivered to your table immediately. Cole slaw extremely
fresh; 'puppies were exactly right -- no hint of grease either.
Catfish was fresh and meaty, with a crunchy breading likewise
without a hint of grease or excess oil. My sides were fried okra
and french fries. The okra was EXTREMELY fresh, lightly breaded
and bore no excess oil. These folks know how to fry things properly.
Beverages served in mason jars with handles. (I drink from mason
jars at home, without handles, and yes, I'm college educated.
They make practical drink glasses.) Service was really personable
and efficient -- friendly, cool guy playin' host at the door;
waitress very sweet and attentive. Although I live 12 or so miles
north of this place, I will absolutely be a return customer.

after call was answered. Ordered 2 entrees and an egg roll; delivery
time was 52 minutes (quoted 30-45 minutes). Egg roll and rice
were room temperature, entrees were hot. My entree was a breaded
chicken which, according to the menu, would be "crispy"
and would contain red peppers and be quite spicy. Breading was
quite soggy, there were no red peppers and it was not very spicy
at all.
For their slow, lackluster service and food not as described
on their menu, I will reward China Panda with no more of my business.

I perused the previous reviews with skepticism... many like
the place but don't comment specifically about the high
quality of the food here. I dined here last evening with 10 friends,
and the food and service were wonderful. They rate "5 Stars"
because what they give their customers for the reasonable prices.
I ordered pepper steak, one friend ordered pot roast, my mother
ordered a hamburger, one friend ordered lasagna and another
had spaghetti with marinara. I sampled their dishes... the marinara
sauce was not at all "watery", as two prior reviewers
commented. It was thick and flavorful. The lasagna was likewise
rich. (Another prior reviewer stated it was "a step above
Stouffer's -- completely inaccurate.) My fellow diners
are Chicagoans (several are Italian, as well) and KNOW Italian
food! And I am a Chicago transplant now residing in Nashville,
and I know restaurants -- much more than most Nashville natives
do. All cuts of meat were very tender and without a hint of gristle.
Mom's burger was quite large, and formed of very lean beef.
Demos' obviously has a good meat supplier.
The service was most excellent and very attentive. This place
wants its customers to be well-fed and happy and it generates
a great deal of goodwill -- the hallmark of a successful business,
whatever its nature. I hold places up to a much higher standard
than most folks born and raised here -- and Demos' impressed
my fellow diners and I. I will be a repeat customer.
