This place looked like it was popular with the locals (parking lot was full) and everyone was very nice but the food was just bad. Everything was the cheapest quality and prepared without skill. The coffee was weak (and a nasty cheap brand to start with), the waffle was barely toasted even though I asked for extra crisp and it was smothered in vile cheap margarine. The sausage and bacon were cheap and greasy, the bread was cheap, the home-fried potatoes were just slopped together and charred in a pan. We left it all on the plate and skipped breakfast. less

The place was busy but not crowded with pretty hip-looking people, many who seemed to be regulars. I was delighted that the wine list had lots of interesting choices by the glass and nothing over $7 (they run the wine shop next door too)! I had a seafood risotto with shrimp, lobster and scallops that was simply perfect. Service was also simply perfect. I felt completely at home there. The location is also terrific right in the heart of downtown Modesto with lots of cafes, night clubs, bars and a very cozy-looking cigar lounge called Cheroot! less

My salad came so wet there was a puddle of water on the plate. My tostada was piled a good 3 inches high with shredded iceberg lettuce (I doubt that is authentic Mexican) with just the tiniest dab of guacamole on top. Again, the lettuce was so wet, the corn tortilla underneath was completely soggy instead of crisp like it should be. I ordered more guacamole and was sorry because it was definitely rotten (i.e. made with bruised and/or rotten avocados). The tamal, beans and rice were fine but really just ordinary -- nothing special. They were out of flan. Overall, a disappointing meal. less

The service is extemely attentive and personal (they seem to know all of the patrons even if it is their first visit)and it makes you feel like a regular. I especially like that they always have properly prepared escagot, steak, fish and creme brulee which are my comfortable old favorites. The wine list is not huge but has a good selection. I have always been able to get a reservation, even on Christmas Eve. less

This is a very casual, family-style place with good to average food and average service. I like to go down there for late lunch or early dinner and watch the sunset. It's nothing special but a reliable old standby.

Well, the prices are upscale but the food is about the same -- bland, ordinary, nicely presented but nothing special. I have been here at least a dozen times since the remodel and spent too much for too little. There are much better places to eat on 4th Street for the price (if you can get a table). In fact EVERYWHERE you can eat on 4th Street is better. That's not to say Spenger's is bad, it just isn't as good as the prices suggest. less

I work at the airport and often see people taking this pizza home with them because they can't get it where they live. This is seriously good pizza and it isn't fair to judge until you've tried it. I LOVE this pizza and sometimes crave it the way I crave my mother's lasagne. I always order take-out because I don't fancy rubbing elbows and rear-ends with college students while I'm eating but I think I would have loved it when I was 25! less

Really fresh, ample portions, expertly prepared, lovely waterfront atmosphere, good wine list - there is nothing left to be desired. The steaks are also high quality and all the appetizers and sides are as good as you would expect for the price but you can find that lots of places - you will not find better crab anywhere. <br> The prices are high but normal for this type of quality food, service, and atmosphere. I have noticed the stuffy service, which seems odd considering the solidly middle-class clientele, but I appreciate their professionalism and dodn't mind the haughtiness as long as they take good care of me (which they always do). less
