It was still there, just as I remembered it from the 1960's, when
westbound traffic from Baltimore went right past it. A giant candy
cane with signage attached---every child's dream! They just
don't make clever signs like that any more. But, fortunately,
the Barbara Fritchie Restaurant still makes comfort foods the old-fashioned
way. On the morning I stopped, after being assured that the restaurant
was still up and running, the booths were filled with an older crowd
munching on pancakes, french toast, perfect eggs, and bacon. But as
much as I appreciated a breakfast that any diner would be proud to serve,
I knew that pies were the specialty. So I ordered 4 pieces to share &
enjoy when I reached my destination: coconut cream, lemon meringue,
apple, and graham cracker pie. All were delicious and worth the short
detour off I-70. Just like the good old days...

OK, I'm the first to think that animated animal heads are just a
bit precious but that doesn't stop me from giggling every time
the spotlight turns on the philosophical moose head or the flapping
fish. Luckily, they're not the only reasons to visit a Bugaboo
Creek Steak House.
This is the home of one of my favorite appetizers: BBQ CHICKEN NACHOS!
Not being overly adventurous, I only tried them at the beginning because
a dining companion ordered them, but I'm first in line to order
them now. I like mine with extra sour cream.
The steaks are pretty much standard for steak houses and I actually
like the mashed potatoes, which are made with red potatoes.
What I miss at Bugaboo Creek are a baked sweet potato and a good dessert.
I'm not tempted by their selection, although I seem to be in the
minority. That's OK. I'll just finish off the nachos!

The Elkton Diner has been around in some form along Rt. 40 for many years.
An earlier incarnation was as a prefab metal structure, which reputedly
had excellent food. The current restaurant has none of the charm of
an old diner but it does have an interesting theme: Marilyn Monroe.
Ms. Monroe graces the walls, as well as shows up in 3-D form sitting just
inside the entrance.
The food is just a little pricey for an uninspired salad bar and lots
of fried food. The crab cake was greasy & flavorless. However,
one of my dining companions raved about the stuffed shells & giant
meatball. Another enjoyed a small steak with homemade mashed potatoes.
So the comfort foods get the nod of approval, if not the regional favorite.
The Elkton Diner is also known for their desserts. I have to admit the
Key Lime Pie was very tasty and generously served. The double chocolate
cake, though, tasted like it came from the local Acme several days earlier.
All of the desserts are displayed in the front of the restaurant so it
might be prudent to check them out before ordering.
Service was very good and the diners looked content. So the Elkton Diner,
a local legend, earns a mixed review...kind of like many of Marilyn
Monroe's movies. A coincidence? We think not.

OK, I admit it. I'm a Hard Rock Cafe fan. I enjoy the loud music videos,
which just barely allow dinner conversation. The memorabilia covering
the wall sends me to Groupie Heaven. But I'm finding that the menu
items are starting to feel a bit dated. (Just like me?) Yes, the nachos
are still plentiful & excellent, especially with the little steak
pieces added. It's my favorite thing to order. But I find that burgers,
french fries, and beer are no longer my preferred lunch choices. Hard
Rock Cafe, remember that Baby Boomers are good customers and excellent
tippers. Give us some new non-fried choices to keep us happy! For anyone
younger and not worried about cholesterol levels, enjoy the food!

We stopped in for breakfast at the Paradise Cove Restaurant because
we had spent the night at the attached Days Inn. On the plus side, the
cheese omelet was HUGE and filled with cheddar. However, some of the
pancakes were under-done on the bottom. We had to ask for toast, which
should have been automatic. Overall, the food was mostly just OK, but
the service was extremely poor. The waitress just walked away (no apologies)
while we were ordering to answer a bell to deliver food to another table.
(We saw this happen twice while we were there.) The food & coffee
at the McDonald's practically next door would have been better
and cheaper. I don't recommend this restaurant for breakfast.

At $12.95 per adult, the price was about right for the offerings. (For
$19.95 each, we could have also had all the champagne, bloody marys,
or mimosas we wanted, too.) The omelet station had crab meat & shrimp,
along with the usual fare. The desserts were mostly on the super-sweet
side, with ornate cakes & cheesecakes topping the list. Service
was a little slow with refills even though the restaurant wasn't
very crowded at that time. The views of the harbor & Main Street
were excellent.

world go by. The sandwiches were great! If you're an oyster fan,

PACKED yesterday so we ordered sandwiches to go. The aisle is so tiny
but the wait staff are adept at circumnavigating the customers. I was
overwhelmed at all the photos decorating the walls & will look
forward to returning on a day that is not so hectic. The owner was teasing
a dating couple sitting at the counter but it was all in good fun. By the
way, the sandwiches were excellent, if pricey. We tried the crabcake
sandwich & a "collosal" turkey sandwich, which was
HUGE. It's definitely worth a visit!

Side" of Rt. 1, which bisects Dewey Beach. There is a lively bar
area and indoor & outdoor seating. The sunsets behind the bay are
lovely. The Rusty Rudder is possibly best known as having an excellent
"Land & Sea" buffet. The salad bar is also excellent.
So enjoy the buffet, then settle into an evening of live entertainment.
You're at the beach!
